Tarantulas are not poisonous they are venomous, just thought that I would clear that up first. Second no one has ever died from a tarantula bite but some of the species you might wish you would've died because you can be in a lot of pain. There are some species of spiders that people have died from. Just remeber all tarantulas are spiders but all spiders are not tarantulas.

A Grammostola Rosea (rose hair) if bitten would be no worse then a bee sting. Mainly the puncture wound itself would hurt.

It is not that unusually that it gave you a treat display. A lot of tarantulas will defend their home. Once you get them out of the enclosure they usually will be okay. The trick is to use a pencil or paint brush and lightly touch it's back legs and as it moves forward and starts to come out of the cage put you hand there so it can go out on to your hand. Just keep in the back of your mine that you will never tame these creatures, they will just tolerate you. Also if you fear them they will sense it as well.

It is also possible that it is getting ready to molt and their attitudes change. Another reason if you are not sure the sex, is that it is a mature male. Sometimes they can get a little ornery are they mature.

Don't give up handling it. If you do,they won't care and you can still enjoy it anyways. Think about it as a look don't touch animal. The fish really hate it when I take them out to play with and they hate when I pet them too.

umm you will look real funny with no a after you l it o

ok here is a few of my fish that really love human touch

Bonita my zebra tilapia loves to be caressed

Rhonda my daughter red pacu like to be touched on the nose

My mated pair of bleekeri small spots like to play tag

A very big oscar I recently rehomed seems very keen on coming to hand feed will try to touch it

A 10'' pair of tweezers from your local flee market or swap shop will come in handy for cleaning and feeding.

Years ago when I maintained a large breeding lab (hundreds of adults, thousands of spiderlings) I never spent more than 15- 20 seconds activly cleaning each cage. If you keep your supplies ready (tweezers, spray bottle, water, and fresh water cups) you will be in and out quickly with minimal stress to the spider. you will also have no need to worry about threat displays.

I never used my hands unless I needed to sex sub adults or fresh imports and even then it was for only a few brief moments and the spider was held firmly in a possition wich prevented any possibility of being bitten (or dropping the spider). As a result, over the course of three years on that job, I was never bitten even when sexing cobalt blues (I charged extra for sexed cobalts).

In my opinion, tarantulas are best kept as ornamental pets and never handled.

That was meant to be a joke. But I have seen some people touch their fish, I personally don't do it. I don't want to damage their slime coating.

When my husband and I are feeding or cleaning our 115 tarantulas, like Kogo said we have all of our supplies handy. Metal tweezers are a very valuable tool to have. Even when they are giving a treat display my husband is able to get them out of the cage. They might strike at the tweezers but he is able to get them out. I only take out a few spiders. I don't mess with the more aggressive species. Here he is holding our star-burst orange otherwise named Orange Bitey thing (OBT). This spider never has give not one treat display my husband says it's defective.

Like I said if you never touch your tarantula again, it will be fine with it. I also think that if you are scared of it than it might be better to leave it alone as well because they sense it. In over two years of keeping tarantulas we have not gotten bitten and we try to keep it that way.

This should take care of it! :D

Nope, I don't need the spider killer spray. All I have to do is let my bearded dragon loose. He is dieing to get his claws on one or all 115.

Oh I didn't give that tarantula that name (OBT) that is what they are known in the hobby. They are know to bite at a drop of a hat. Actually we don't have a name for that tarantula.

I always wanted to own one of those sun burst tarantula, but I don't want to feel a hot iron nail driving into me

They run pretty fast too, dont know how to catch it back if it went loose

Well that's normal, i mean being scared of touching a tarantula.:nilly:

What really surprises me is that a lot of people seem to touch and hold their spyders with bare hands just as if they were holding a kitty.....

Regardless it is always fun to see them so why don't you post some picts of that agressive little beast of yours pal....

Well, they're furry like kittens.

If all else fails, the ever trusty stick can always be used for tarantula herding and mixing up the soil.
