North American Natives are undervalued...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah our Pumpkinseed Sunfish used to be very popular Pond pets in Germany and France before they outlawed them.

I talked with a guy that knows cichlids about this discussion. He smiled and said you should have told me about the conversation. He and I always debate about natives and the other fish. He sees natives as food and junk fish. He also includes our native turtles in that too. He did partly defend a few natives in our discussion. He said put a black crappie in with a jaguar cichlid and it would be a pathetic show. In his opinion, best thing about a peacock is size. He said the black bass has more excitement and is better. It was very funny to see customers watching our debate and giving an audience to our sometimes heated discussion. :lol2:

The funny thing is so many fishkeepers have never owned natives and so they dont have any knowledge to go on....yet theyll still agrue. Black Crappie eat small minnows whereas a full grown Jag will eat a full grown convict. It would be a better matchup to put a full grown spotted Bass or a Spotted/Smallmouth hybrid like we have around here who will eat medium sized Sunfish and are very aggressive in with a full grown Jag.

I would keep native if they are available locally but I'm several hundreds of miles from the nearest lake. Beside keep native would save a lot of money from heating cost.

I wish and hope that one day I will have the money to create the project I have in my mind. If I do get a chance to do this project successfully, all of you get in for free!!!!

This is one mfk member that will remember that quote! Lol. I love my native setup and definitely think it rivals my other exotic setups. I wish more people tried natives, I think more would love it!

interesting points. i must admit though, i find nothing neat about natives. never have kept them in a tank, dont want to, and probably never will. but it's like you say, people like the 'exotic' factor of owning something that comes from another part of the world and cant be found in a local river.

:)

Strange...that having been said, how did you stumble into a thread about Native Fish, in a forum Named Cold Water, Temperate and North American Native Fish

And comment that you have absolutely no interest in them what-so-ever...........

You don't think our natives should be given credit for being able to hold their own against cichlids or anything else. That is your opinion.

where did she say that was her opinion? i must have missed that part
