northern pike or muski companions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hmm well I don't think I can get the bass yous are talkin about here and the only trout I've seen here are rainbow trout. Don't northern pike and muskys have really big teeth to? I can get hold of aligator gar but thought pike would be more spectacular to watch hunt. And as I don't want to have to go to the difficulty of heating a big outdoor tank I wanted to see what other options there were to go with the pike if kept outside.

Pike are particularly docile (like all esox). If any fish has the chance, they'll kill them. all sunfishes (Bass included) are out. Cichlids will almost certainly kill a pike. On the other side of the esox coin is their huge mouth and even larger appetite. Pike will eat fish 1/2 their weight if slender enough to fit in their mouth. Once the pike has completed it's growth spurt, I think a gar might work.

FYI...I'll bet a bullhead would shred a pike one quite night so catfish might also be out.

Sorry but it's a fine balance when it comes to keeping esox with tank mates.

AMEN!

Ok so yous are all basically saying that a NP or a musky should be kept in a tank by themselves with no other fish what so ever.

Before I found out about the possibilty of getting a NP or Musky my intention was to get a silver arro, alligator gar, P Bass and birchirs with some schooling fish, such as silver dollars with possibly later when the fish had grown a tortoise all in the same tank.

Who thinks thats a better option than keeping a NP or musky in my 9.5f tank?

There are more fish you can keep with... one of the smaller species if you don't mind them being 2 feet. Either that or get a couple fast breeders so you don't notice the decrease in population.

You can keep a group of muskie and or northern pike together. Now that would be a site.

I think the bottom feeding fishes are OK if they aren't big enough for pike to eat. Freshwater Drum, White Sucker, Carp, etc. would be some choices although all attain larger sizes.

Hmm I'd like to do a group of muskys or NP but considering the price thats outa the equasion.

Anyone think they are more interesting to watch hunt than a aligator gar?

Sorry for all the questions just that this a once off opurtunity and I don't want to regret it as I have the choice of aligator gar which is also a once off at least for a while, so its 1 or the other if you know what I mean.

No I don't think they would be more interesting...I KNOW they would be. I love watching my pickerel follow the prey around the tank and then just snaps. If you don't mind me asking how much are these guys going for down under?
