Northern Snakeheads Found in Delaware Pond
--Chad Love

Everyone knows the snakehead is an aggressive invader that will eat pretty much anything it can get down its throat, but teenage boys in kayaks?

From this story on nbcphiladelphia.com:

Officials in Delaware want to know who dumped invasive and aggressive fish into a Bear pond. Northern snakeheads were discovered last week in Becks Pond after one bit a teen kayaker trying to catch some younger snakeheads, according to state Fish & Wildlife Enforcement. “Snakeheads are known for aggressively protecting their young,” said Fisheries Biologist Stewart Michels.

On Tuesday state officials retrieved a 25-inch fish and several hundred young fish from the pond. And at least two more adult snakeheads were seen in the water, according to officials. Snakeheads, which are prohibited to be owned by state and federal laws, are highly predatory fish that can impact other fish and amphibians, officials said. The pond is popular fishing spot for anglers looking to catch bass, crappie and bluegill.

Skinny dipping during the snakehead spawn? Not a good idea...

lol now my question is wich one of you forum members was the teen who got biten trying to catch the babys hahahahaha

Invasive Snakeheads Found in Becks Pond in NCCo

DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement officers want to know who placed invasive northern snakeheads in Becks Pond in New Castle County.

DNREC learned about the snakeheads last week when a teen kayaking in the pond was bitten by a snakehead while trying to capture some of its young.

Wildlife officials caught one 25-inch adult snakehead, along with several hundred juveniles. But they say there may be two more adult snakeheads still in the pond.

If you see a snakehead or catch a snakehead, you’re asked to call 739.9914.

Fish and Wildlife Enforcement seeks suspects for illegally introducing species

BEAR (Aug. 18, 2011) – Following this week’s discovery of invasive northern snakeheads in Becks Pond in Bear, one of Delaware’s most popular fishing ponds, the DNREC Division of Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Section is seeking information from the public that would lead to a suspect or suspects who placed the fish in the pond. State and federal law prohibits possession of these highly aggressive, predatory fish, a species that can impact other fish, amphibians and invertebrates.

Anyone with information that might help the investigation is asked to call Sgt. Gregory Rhodes, Fish and Wildlife Enforcement, at 302-542-6102, or call Enforcement dispatch at 302-739-4580.

“We believe these fish were illegally introduced into Becks Pond, and we are actively seeking the party or parties responsible,” Sgt. Rhodes said.

Following an incident last Wednesday, Aug. 10 in which a New Castle County teen kayaking in the pond was bitten by a snakehead while trying to capture some of its young, DNREC fisheries biologists surveyed the pond on Aug. 16. One 25-inch adult snakehead was captured, along with several hundred juveniles about 1 to 1 ½ inches long. Two more adult snakeheads were seen and biologists suspect more may be present in the popular pond, which is known to anglers for its bass, crappie and bluegill.

“Snakeheads are known for aggressively protecting their young,” said Fisheries Biologist Stewart Michels, noting that anyone fishing in the pond should avoid attempting to capture schools of small fish.

Northern snakeheads are long slender fish with long anal fins reaching from mid-body to tail. The pelvic fins on the belly and pectoral fins behind the gills are very close together. The dorsal fin on the back runs from the back of the head to the tail. The mouth is large and has sharp teeth. Coloration is generally tan with dark brown blotchy bands.

The Fisheries Section asks that any possible snakehead catches in Becks Pond or other Delaware waters be reported by calling 302-739-9914. Photos may be sent to catherine.martin@state.de.us. Snakeheads should not be released back into the water but should be killed or frozen.

Sorry, I have to disagree with Sgt. Rhodes on this one. I believe that these fish made it to this Delaware pond by 100% legal means! We all know that this is the apex of fish ever created on Gods Green Earth. No doubt in my mind that these invasives "swam" over to the East coast from Asia around the cape of "NO" hope in S. Africa. We all know the legendary land capabilities of these monsters. The few hundred mile walk over land to Becks Pond was nothing for these beasts!

Stop blamming we MFK'rs on this. 100% natural inhabitation IMO!

J/K!

no blames just wanted some the fry lol

Build the pond, and they will come!

Everyone knows that all you have to do is dig a hole in your backyard and fill it with water and they will come and stock themselves in you new pond FREE OF CHARGE! Don't even worry about the regulation chain link fence around your property. These beast will go right through these strong metal fence links like a hot steak knife through warm table butter.

I am so impressed with this fish I can't even put it into words.

On my last flight acress country I had a snakehead flying right outside of my 747 window from Maryland all the way to Cali. baby! What a fish! No wonder they are the UBER invasive.

IMO this species is not of earth and made interstellar flight from a neghboring solar system to be the #1 invasive on earth. These are not actually fish, but allien life forms!:headbang2

Isn't it ridiculous how they portray these fish? Walking on land, eating small pets, blah blah blah. How many people have lost snakeheads due to jumping out of tanks? They don't even survive more than a few hours outside of a fish tank. I moved to Taiwan three years ago, and I have yet to even hear about snakeheads "walking" around. There are a few native species that live here. That's a bunch of bull. Big deal if a kid got bitten by a snakehead. There are much more dangerous creatures out there, like snapping turtles that will take off a finger, rattlesnakes, black widows, bears, bobcats, the deadly amoeba that has claimed 3 lives so far this summer, etc. A kid gets bitten by a snakehead trying to protect its young. Did he/she lose a finger? Or end up in the hospital? Did he/she require stitches? Is he/she in the hospital in critical condition? I highly doubt it. There are other invasive fish out there that do more harm than snakeheads. How about your regular carp that eats fish spawn. Let's also not forget about the Asian silver carp, which can knock you out in your boat. So, a kid that gets bitten by a snakehead, that most likely didn't require more than a bandage, ends up in the news.

Amen, Brother (or Sister if that b the case)! I can 100% vouch from PERSONAL experience these highly undesirable "INVASIVE TO MY damn farm pond" walk overland EVERY FREAKIN' year and come into my pond. A neighborhood kid recieved a broken ARM from being hit by one of the M.F's (and I don't mean monster fish), and that occured in the drainage of the pond and NOT swimming in deep water.

I would bet the farm on ANY of these 30 - 50 pound beasts (EATING ANY DAMN SNAKEHEAD) it came in contact with. Oh PLEASE someone take that bet. I video documentary of the "harmless native snapping turtle" rapeing ANY snakehead might astound people.

On second though, lets not! The weak minds that are required to believe any of the B.S. american TALL TALES of the infamous "WALKING SNAKEHEAD MONSTER" would probably be pushed into commiting suicide upon learning the truth. Sorry, scap that pee poor idea!
