from what kara says it is going to be ok. i'm really glad it wasnt the trop or our largest florida/spotted. either way it sucks, but it could have been worse.

i finally got home and had the chance to check over he fish and everything seems like it's going to be fine. it's just missing some slime coat and had some ripped fins...no big deal.

OR TELL KARA TO LOG OUT.... I can never tell which of you I'm talking to....
Anyhow good to hear the fish is fine and you can again chalk that up to a fish that makes Persistence an art form... Got to love a lepisosteid for their tenacity of survival in even the most difficult of situations.

So sad though the one thing that bites them in the butt more often than not is one of the things that has made them as successful as they are... Their backbone and how it is structured in relation to the rest of their specialized morphology.

Jordan what is the level of space you keep between the top of the tank and water level? I know this is sometimes an issue with overflows but with a space of more than 3 inches the chances of a fish jumping tank dwindles to almost nothing. (cases with annoying nocturnal tankmates not counted as this more often than not is the cause for the fish jumping)

Sounds like he's gonna make it. That's great news. You owe that cat some treats.
If it were not for the cat, you both would have probably left the house as per normal. Without knowing.

for the record He doesnt log off ever either but Im smart enough to log him off and log myself on when I want to post something....Just assume the username you see is the one posting unless he makes the same mistake and corrects himself again...

and we dont keep the water level 3" below the surface but that is def. a thought now.

...and on that note I'm signing myself off

i definitely agree with keeping the water level lower...i do this in most of my tanks (except the big one, which is necessary for the overflows) and it works quite well. gars will always be jumpers, but it helps to have at least a couple inches of space from the top so they won't be as likely to jump out.

also keep in mind they are strong, so taping/weighing down the tops is also highly recommended--
