my water level is more than 2" from the top, but not quite 3"...they really dont jump that often, but when they do it seems to be right through the openings.

are you guys done picking on me yet? i have to hear her all day...including here now! :nilly:

Well of coarse it would be less than 3 inches if it was More than two...

Nope can't stop picking on you yet.... Just got to be done... It's like the dude that steps over rather than wipes his feet on the clean towel at the door.. You miss it your going to get beaten... Center of Lepisosteid obsession hazing rituals are complex..... :P

Anyhow.... really this is an effective method. Gars will rarely roll or porpoise above 3 inches. (Shortnosed I give 4 inches But as you know they are special) If the housing circumstances permit, this works to keep them jumping ship. Tankmates may however change this as an annoyed gar will seek refuge by removing it's self from the annoyance and few barriers aside from a total sealing will avoid this. Real problem with this sealing though is you never get exactly what that the gar is not comfortable with and is having issues with. I would strongly suggest taking a look at the tankmates being with those gar and identify if there is an issue. Gar do not usually jump ship in ideal conditions.

i agree with richard in looking into the tankmates...gars can definitely set off other gars, but usually not into that much of a jump...gars seem to set off other gars in a rapid downward/away dispersal as opposed to upward (at least in my observations).

i think if a large gar wants to move upward it won't matter if it is 2" or 5"...as i've had some big gars jump and easily clear wherever the top of the tank would be, AND move the top of the tank to end up on the floor...hence the weighing/taping down of covers now.

and as for picking on you...we're really just giving advice here, however, given the leeway of hazing rituals, this is the second time it's happened to you :) don't worry, it's nothing on the level of thinking topping off a tank is a water change/keeping a large Cuban gar in said conditions ;) --

i know i have a few tankmates that are not "suggested" and somewhat questionable, but i observe my fish constantly and if i noticed any aggression or discomfort between any fish i have...action would have been taken. i honestly think that both instances were just flukes. i have had them for several years now and this has only happened twice...i dont think that is out of the norm.

i know you guys are just having fun at my expense...and richard is just being...well...richard (what's another name for richard)? :D hmmm...anyhow as always i appreciate the advice and any help you two have to offer. knowledgable people and good advice seem to be few and far between these days...with some exceptions of course.

thats just low... as long as these lessons are learned from...right?

You guys are pretty good-natured compared to some of the stuff that gets tossed around in SA cichlids

You'd think it was kind of flukey having had the gars for awhile but both jumps are pretty recent no? I thought the other incident was in March. Any recent changes? Anyway biggest thing is the gar looks like it's going to be fine. They're pretty resilient...gars and polys, gotta love 'em.

The last one happened I think last October but someone just brought the thread back in March. still kinda close together considering how long we have owned them. Both gar were new-ish at the time. Our very first gar has never done this and we've had him quite a while now.

Ah OK then fluke seems a bit more likely. Well at least the tops are coming so hopefully no more accidents...

Maybe they (the Gars) just want to "play" with the cat.
I have a Green Terror who seems to really get riled up at my cats. (and my grandson) He has lifted the tops, and pushed them kitty wampus a few times now.

Is your cat/cats often on top of the tank? (Like mine)
