Yes I understand what you are saying and I agree, What I'm saying is that force being applied by the aquarium is vertical. IMO any of the 3 drawings you have are fine for vertical loads. If there was a horizontal load than the other two would be much better. I went with the toenailing because it meant less cuts for me. If I was worried at all about it not being strong enough I would not have done it this way.
