Hey i have had my p's for almost a week and they are still not very aggressive sometimes it takes them hours to even consider the food i was told by some friends that have p's that i should not feed them for a few days in between feedings so they are somewhat starving is this a good or bad idea any help would be great:D

They are still adjusting to their new home, and this can last for months!
It is not uncommon for piranhas to take 6 months until they show a more, well natural side. Their lack of aggression is probably due to being scared and not secure at the moment.
To help them settle in, dim the lights, have dark substrate and background, a good current and good water quality. Most of these are what any good piranha keeper will have anyway, but even more vitally important when first introducing the fish.

'Starving' them is not a good idea, if piranhas want to eat, they will eat. Even if that means picking off the weaker members of the shoal. But feeding less often and in different portions each time is ideal. They do not get used to a routine, and it acts upon their feeding in the wild. Although piranhas can go for 2 weeks with out food, i would recommend no more than a few days at the most. Many find one day on one day off ideal.

Time, patience and good keeping is all that is needed.

man, you have to be a bit more patient ...

you have to remember you have fish that are accustom in the amazon to having anything bigger than them eating them right away... they are just acting naturally...

takes some time for them to realize you mean them no harm, spend some time close to the tank every day and smaller feedings more often in the day also helps a bit...

but once they do come out of their shells, you'll love em like kids...

cheers man, all the best

piranhas are exactly theo opposite of what everyone makes them out to be. it almost dissapoints me but there still cool fish. they will tear there food up as they eat it because thats wha they do, but they are not born killers. they will not destroy anything in the tank. they do the opposite, they get freaked out because there afraid of whatever u jus threw in is gonna kill them or harm them. after they realize its food they yes, they will destroy it. not exactly what i had in mind when i purchased my piranhas. but there still cool. i jus hate how i can't put anything with them.

when they hit the 6" range and up they get a new confedince in them and dont freak out nearly as much...

it also depends on the numbers of fish, for red bellys at least...

but depending on what piranha we're talkin about here...

some are plucked right from the rivers and put threw stressful packaging and shipping to get here to your tank, takes a bit of recovery time and dealing with new surroundings...

dont worry thou man, they come around...

my cariba when i got them 6months ago, were even more skiddish then my reds, but since then they are mean aggressive finger chasers that take food out of my hands...

cheers

P's IMO have way too much hype for what u get. i understand getting a cool black or elongatus or whatever it is, but the common rbp are lame, take too long to become brave, dirty eaters, and they nip! i dont want to spend thousands on a setup to not see my fish cuz there wimps, and when i do seee them, there all bitten and look beat up...maybe its just me.. but i say Pirahna's have 100% too much hype!

i agree my piranha never look bad occasional nipped fin except my one has been missing his eye since he was a juvi but i think that just adds character and he is the only one i named and also if you keep them eating normally they dont really need to nip also i find that mine dont really hide they more often just go to the back of the tank and think they are hiding again everyone thanks for the pointers

Wow thanks so much for all the valuable info you provided. :irked: I'm sure this new member will really value your opinion.

Sometimes it take a while with RBPs my current batch Ive had now for 3 months and just recently they are eating in my presence. Like stated before dark substrate and background, clean water and good current. With mine I also use and power head to increase current and I move it around the tank to different positions in the tank each water change/tank cleaning, it seems to make them more active and rebound form the w/c experience quicker.
