Now that the idiot in me has had his fun ... I'm ready to learn.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How long have you had that second syno? Tough to tell but that looks like a Syn. longirostris. If it indeed is, that's a fish that can grow to 24"

Only a couple of weeks ... 2 of them were given to me. If thats the case on its size, then its going as well. Trying to get this under control, Thanks for the info Big Jay. All I know about the 2 little synos is that they were called mixed hybrid featherfins.

Compare this to your second syno. The resemblance is VERY similar. I would verify it first. If it indeed is a Longirostris they are rare and worth a little bit of money

I agree the resemblence is quite similar. I'll take a closer look after work. But I'm not ready for a 24" fish yet. One day probably (not letting my inexperience get the best of me .... I really do enjoy this, just need to get it right first). Thanks for the headsup once again, I appreciate the help and truly do need it.

I'd say in order to get really viable advice, you first need to decide in what direction you'd like to go within the hobby. If you want a lush planted display, the advice would be totally different than that of a cichlid display. If you enjoy cichlids, and also want plants, there are species that would work great in your 55. CO2 works amazingly if used properly (dosage, diffusion), but too much can be a silent killer to your fish. So if its peaceful and planted, or bare bottomed and aggressive, you're in the right spot and your asking the right questions, you just need to make a few decisions first.

The Cichlids are out ... that was already decided ... maybe down the road with tanks more suitable. The 55 ... hmmm ... we want plants, want to keep my syno ocellifer and my senegal bichir. Don't know what else at the moment, been looking at different varieties of plants at the moment. Still in debates about the whole CO2 thing, currently only adding the Api CO2 booster. Been browsing through the sticky's looking at none CO2 plants and such. I like Cichlids but need another tank this size or bigger first.
I apologize if I seem naive at this, but the first 30 gallon tank was kind of dropped in my lap. (The previous owners were moving and started me off with some really poor advice I now know). As each day passes I learn a little more, and realize how little I know.

I appreciate your response Anchovie, and am trying to figure out which direction I am going (or can even go for now). My wife wants the plants, she likes the bichir and we both want to keep the syno Ocellifer. Everything else at the moment is fair game in my mind. Does this make sense?

I have a feeling that its the same as yours (just seems to be my luck) ... If he is gonna grow 24 inches, like I said he's gone. Just trying to get this sorted out and find a direction.

Well the 8 said fish are now gone, plus the two little syno's got returned to friend (he was surprised to hear they might reach 24" as well .... but that's his problem now). and my tanks are now somewhat fixed. Managed to solve problems with my two 30's, with the advise I've been receiving on this 55. But now 2 of my tanks look bare. Quite surprised that I hadn't lost more fish over the past 4 yrs. (only lost 4, and the 2 fish I blamed on my syno ocellifer for killing, I now know was me having poor fish management). Everything looks happy now, but I'm left with a different dilema now. But a much better one. What to add my 55 gallon and what to put in my other 30 gallon.
The 55 now has just the 1 synodontis ocellifer and 1 senegal bichir ... thinking of adding 1 or 2 more senegals ... but would like some suggestions as to what else might look good in there instead of more senegals. The tank will have plants staying in it, most are attached to driftwood but some have been planted into the substrate.
The 30 gallon ... currently has 2 garras in it, just to keep it cycling and such. But I plan on moving them back to my first 30 (which would make it full at that point according to Aqadvisor) ... I like Cichlids as well and saw that there's some that could live in a 30 ... African Butterfly Cichlid was one I saw. Guess I'm asking for advise on what types of fish Cichlid wise I could go with. I'd like to have more than 2 fish if possible in that tank.
Thanks again for all help received.

imo you can add 1-2 more senegals and a pair of medium sized semi-agg like angels, or a single if you prefer as a "centerpiece" I've found sens do well with oddball species in general and with them "generally" utilizing the bottom w/ your cat imo you want to go with a mid/top swimming to help balance things and make the tank somewhat active. TBH I'de go with a single nice EBJD or other smaller ca/sa cichlid.

Thanks ... I like the idea. Just worried that if I was to add 2 senegals plus a pair of medium sized angels that I'd be overstocked again. I'm no experienced fishkeeper (obviously) which the Aqadvisor seems to think is needed to overstock, mind you I now know my 1 30 gallon was running at about 180% (if not higher) capacity for 3 yrs. before I finally corrected it.
But it would be nice to have something stay near the top for viewing .... as for cichlids in my 55, I'm just worried about the plants we're trying to establish. But thanks again.
Anymore suggestions as to what to include anyone?
