Nuchal humps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Your fish is growing the hump cause most likely he is the dominant fish in the tank. You might try eliminating what ever is triggering his hormones. Try introducing fish that can quell his temper. If you have females in the tank, 86 them. And cut down on his food intake. The hump is mainly fat based. Short of spaying your Nic, this may help you.

Ok, thanks darippa. And thanks Kaosu. He is the boss of this tank and does have a female he spawns with. The weird thing is he's been the boss of the tank for almost 2 years and has been breeding with the female for over a year now. It's just recently that the hump has really started to pop up. I guess I'll learn to appreciate it since I don't want to get rid of my female and I don't want to upset their hierarchy since it's a pretty peaceful tank for a cichlid tank.

Reducing a fishes food intake isn't going to have any effect on the size of a nuchal hump, nor are nuchal humps mainly fat based. Nuchal humps are mainly comprised of water, and tissue. Fluctuations in fluid allow the hump to expand during courtship, and decrease post breeding.

Um....
I have heard there are dietary changes that can increase the size of a nuchal hump, therefore I don't think it was stupid to ask if there are ways to decrease it without harming the fish. I won't deprive him of something he needs or anything like that.

Since when is asking a question complaining? And I don't keep fish that are known to get large nuchal humps, afaik nics don't tend to get large ones.

Clearly not a question-...
...and I personally hate the look of them. Looks like someone hit him over the head with a crowbar...

You'll be sorely disappointed then, compared to FH humps it's tiny. It's even kinda pointy, not well rounded, hence looking like someone whacked him with a crowbar. I'll try to get a pic though so you can laugh at me being ridiculous about my lumpy fish.
