Nutritional value of frozen bloodworms?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't fed bloodowrms in years.. and tbh since I stopped I haven't had any issues with constipation ect which I would see routinely in spiney eels ( one of the notoriouse fish lfs tell you to feed bloodworms too) since then I have switched to feeding live blackworms... I am aware there are frozen blackworms now out there but I don't have the space to hold a box of them, nore enough fish to eat up that many... But I can say the growth/health I've seen since making that switch has been amazing.

I don't see why you couldn't buy and freeze your own in ice cube trays ect if you want to avoid live feedings.

Wouldn't hurt to try instead of the bloodworms.. otherwise defrosting the worms w/ pellets ect is a time honored tradition in our household for picky eaters Rob =) GL... and now i'm curiosue what you got....

Bloodworms are about the worst stuff you can feed your fish IMO but if he eats them, better than nothing. I would try to get him on other foods ASAP though.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Do you all suppose that crickets would be a good food for these guys to put on some weight? The ingredients on a Can o' Crickets look a lot better than the ingredients on bloodworms. I'm thinking that I could feed either the Can o' Crickets or live crickets. Plus, if the fish get used to feeding from the surface that only helps with pellet training. They will snap bloodworms off of the surface but with how emaciated the one fish is, I'm scared to put them through any sort of starvation to get them on pellets.

The PraziPro seems to have helped, they don't waste between feedings quite so much and they've taken some horrendous looking poops. I removed all of the substrate from the tank to help with vacuuming. They get daily water changes.

Amy, I got more tigerfish. Of course. LOL

Here's some pics for everyone who asked:

The bigger, healthy looking one is H. forskahlii. I'm fairly certain that the emaciated one is H. brevis, but I can't be sure with how rough of shape he's in.

He does look a bit better now though.

How am I not surprized? lol.. and I def see why you wouldn't wanna starve them.. I'de fear loseing the one. I swear you keep posting up pics and i'mna buy the one at the lfs I saw and say to heck w/ Justins growling... ( hed eat my denisoni's and glowlight tetras no doubt) no clue what species it is but it's a lil' beauty! I've read a few threads on using those cans o crickets but tbh idk if they are safe or not.. I'de QT crickets ect if you go the live route for sure... not all petstores get them from reputable breeders/sellers. Have you tried nightcrawlers? good proteins/vit/min source if they will take them opposed to the frozen bloodworms for sure. idk what the dietary needs of tigers are anywhere near as well as you and the other guys who keep them.. but I imagine since the blackworms/nightcrawlers are higher in proteins ect w/ a fish like that i'm assuming burns a lot of calories should help them put on lost weight.

I like the tinfoil trick.... must say as well =)

what about market shrimp. raw and cut up. they'll sink to the bottom and wont mess the water too much, plus they will smell really good and give them all a chance to try.

I hate bloodworms. They just mess all over and get on the glass and everywhere.

Plus I almost died from an allergy to them! that was weird.

I would try raw prawns cut up, or super worms cut up or frozen krill or plankton

ATF are really easy to care for. They just need dithers, lots of current and clean water. If they have those three things, they heal like Wolverine and are very adaptable. The only catch is if you have young ones that are pellet training, there WILL be collateral damage in the form of dead fish. Its give or take. Normally by the time they're 6-7 inches however, they're pretty tame and easy to manage.

Sucks that you had a reaction to bloodworms! That's crazy!

Crickets are definitely a better source of nutrition than blood worms. Pretty much anything is. Have you tried shrimp or tilapia, Rob?

I have considered chunks of fillets. At this point I'm willing to consider things that I normally wouldn't to try to get some bulk on the little guy. The big one seems to be doing OK however. To be completely honest, I wasn't prepared to have to handle an emergency situation with a sick fish, this caught me off guard.

I'm gonna try to pick up some fillets tomorrow.

There is no better food to fatten up a fish than shrimp imo. I only feed it about once a week and only because i love seeing my dats with HUGE bulging stomachs
