OB Peacocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, they are still little, i am waiting to see if they develop any colors, im hoping they do. I felt a bit guilty about breeding them but i wanted to see what i would get. I kept a couple for my self to see and gave the rest to Jhutch for feeders when did the tank trade months ago.

I love my OB's.

Wow, those are real nice looking. I had someone on another site i go to reply to a thread i did in a breeding section where i showed my "experiment" and stated that i was not selling these fish to the publlic, just like them for my own use . He lectured me on "hybrids" and called all OB peacocks "crap" and stated he wished he was a millionare so he could go around and buy every OB peacock so nobody would ever be able to have one. I hate people like that. He used the dwindling fish populations in the lakes as a excuse for his opinions about keeping the strains pure. Meanwhile he is a big time home breeder using all F0 stock. I got real angry and posted that maybe if people like him did not feel they needed the status symbol of wild fish for their home breeding program (the only reason for this for a home breeder is so that they can get a couple bucks extra ea for the fry or a status symbol). There is plenty of good F1 stock available . Anyway i told him not to refer to my fish as crap again unless he is pointing out a specific fault or short coming of the fish compared to the norms for that fish...Really made me mad. I dont like it when others try to force their opinions or likes and dislikes on others.

You should have said. The reason why there is dwindling populations in the lake is because you are taking the fish out of his natural environment and putting them in a tank. I do keep wild caught fish. I like some hybrids such as the fire fish dragons blood and strawberry peacocks even though they are the same fish just different quality.

Interesting... did he mention anything to the tune of OB strains happening in the wild and that they were as natural as the other fish that he loved so dearly? lol

BTW...Dragon Bloods and Strawberries are not hybrids, just another line bred fish.:)

Thanks, I did LOL. Here is my response i posted to him and it about sums up my feelings on the whole subject. I will leave all usernames and other info off since im not into trying to embarrass /flame people , especially after i have said what i needed to say :

OK, Im just gonna come out and speak my mind here.

I have kept cichlids for 22 yrs. I understand the hybrid controversy. I am not uneducated on the different sides of the argument. I have kept a hybrid fish only twice in those 22 yrs.

I dont sell hybrid fish to the public, all fry were disposed of except for the 3 in the pictures. These fish will never leave my tanks. If i want to breed two species to look at the outcome for myself and keep the specimens in my own tank then thats my business and nobody elses. I am a ethical fish keeper and breeder. I never sell hybrid fish to unsuspecting people or release tank raised fish into any waterways. I do not need anybody lecturing me on the ethics of hybrid fish.

Just out of curiosity, do you keep WC stock for your breeding ? Many people who do home breeding feel they must have F0 breeding stock . This is what is driving the over fishing and even the poaching of endangered species. I think people who are screaming about the conditions in the lakes should do their part LIKE I DID and not buy ANY wild caught fish from any of the african lakes. I can afford WC fish but did not feel comfortable purchasing them with the state of the lakes. If everyone did that it would solve a large part of the problem. People are greedy though and like to have them as either a status symbol or for the sole purpose of being able to charge a couple bucks more for the fry than they would if they bought F1 stock and had to sell F2 fish. Unfortunetly F2 might as well be the kiss of death for a serious collector. Until that changes I dont see much hope.

I like the OB peacock. When you called all OB peacocks crap you were saying a fish i keep is crap. Dont do that again unless your basing that on a deformity or some other feature that is lacking when compared to what ever the norm for that fish might be. Its rude. Lots of people keep OB peacocks and if you go around doing that its going to drive away membership

So I will chime in.

1.) You aren't going to sell OBs at aquabid very well... The people that go there are more into "pure fish" (Well except for Discus, flowerhorns and ...)
2.) Ob peacocks are a very easy fish to get. So you need to have something special. I may try breeding my guy since he has the blue strain and is a fryeri. But honestly I couldn't sell them at my club since even when they go up for bid the auctioneer will mention right off the bat they are hybrids.
Finally I am of the belief we can have both hybrids and species fish. Especially if we can use hybrids to get people interested in the hobby.

The key problem with OB malawis and hybrids is that it is very hard to sell fish that people know are the right species. Heck even wilds it is next to impossible to tell female apart... IE when they collect peacocks they get a net of at least 3 different females, and well I don't know how they are able to say what is what. (Supposedly scare patterns.)

So people argue that if things are already so much against keeping species pure, then why make matters worse by introducing odd strains.

OH and people can we please keep pictures to a sane size... ie 800 width max. Thanks. (I hate scrolling with even a wide screen)

These fish are stunning they hybrids with zebra and what ?

I have seen ads for them don't know much about Africans as keep fire mouths and jewels only .
