It is odd that he recovered. I've never seen that happen. Whatever caused him to lose control of the ability to change color has reversed.
How long did the fish stay that way?
It's possible that the infection didn't cause him to lose the ability completely, just during the time he was infected.
It is also possible as you mentioned that he got slammed, and like a brain concusion, temporarily caused the fish to lose control. Once recovered, the ability was restored.
