I have a 6" mbu that I have had from 2 inches and he is definetely not a tank patroller. He spends most of his day in one corner of the tank. The parameters are fine, everyone else is swimming fine, he eats well and all but has never been very active.... Any thoughts?
Please don't hijack someone else's thread with this, start a new one.

This is almost exclusive to the puffer forum. I see the "you'll stunt that fish if you don't give it a 1000g" explanation at every turn. Unfortunately (as I've stated before), people tend to regurgitate information based on opinion without realistically looking at the reasons.

While I agree that the fish grows to a large size (26.4" TL on fishbase) and requires a large volume of water, the CONSTANT lack of evidence other than conjecture is disheartening.

And while I respect PP's opinion and specialized attention to puffers, I don't think "wait for PP to get here and explain it" is a valid response. Many times, PP references her own site articles (nothing wrong with that, I guess), but if the information was brought into the MFK environment, they may be scrutinized a bit more and a good dialogue would be healthy.
right on i think 1000 gallon for a mbu is BS . every one believes what they read

Admitted! They DO know more about puffer care/growth. You won't find that I have ever done anything more than ASK WHY does the mbu require a 1000g tank? If you bothered to read some of the previous threads on the subject, there was a wide variance of opinion - even on the puffer forum. I went through and linked the varying opinions that went from 400g to 1000g. And if 1000g is the minimum, how come they do great in an 800? That's a 20% smaller than the minimum tank? All I have asked is for people to provide factual evidence or studies and NOT conjecture.

Asking for evidence or something other than "because I said so" isn't a crime, and nor should it be shunned. The fact that you took offense to my comment and are attempting to bait me into argument only reinforces my point above.

As far as your fahaka, congrats. That's great appreciable growth, but doesn't prove the case one way or the other, even if you did EXPERIENCE it. I guess you're assuming that because I ask a question, I don't have experience with puffers or with fish in general?
ive talk to people on youtube all the time all that have mbus and they have mbu in 300 gallons and up and there all very happy

just from 3rd person view, PP does intimidate people asking for assistance. who are we to set minimum tank size at the first place? following that logic, we should never house a fish in an aquarium for they would much rather be left alone in the wild with millions of gallons to play with. We should just quite our hobby altogether.

I do acknowlege the information she has to offer however, but many times over, i've seen replies like, do you even have 1000g tank for it? don't bother keeping the fish. and thread ends there.

I also understand PP's position though, she loves puffers and too many times, people house fish in bad environment and she just wants what's best for the fish! (here comes intimidation on defence of puffers haha )

I'm glad op found the clogged filter problem! i'm glad your mbu is healthy and well :D

No offense to any of you saying that; MBU's don't need 1000G or agreeing that seeing people on youtube with one in a 300G - 500G tanks are happy...

But in all honesty, how long have these people kept their MBU's in these tanks and how long are they now?

I only ask coz i've read articles in the past of people keeping MBU's in a 300G tank which ended up suffering and dying due to problems with growth or their cardinal fins getting bent...

As for PP being intimidating, i think its more to do with people not liking what they hear from her and saying that shes bullying / intimidating when infact all shes trying to do is get the message across...

Personally i've found both PP and her forum to be of great help to me, especially when i was first learning about puffers... now i hang out more over here only because there is more of a selection of fish for me to check out... but when it comes to puffers, PP and the mentors on her site have NEVER given me bad advice, only been more than happy to help...

So i say keep it up PP :headbang2 and let the haters hate... :wall:

LOL, I'm a big girl, I can take it! Let's hear about those mbus that are 15 years old or older.
