oddball feeders

i thought at first shiners, but looking around there are many fish that look like this
 
but then again there are some rasboras that look like that too
 
Did you get it from the rosy red tank? If so it was most likely just a rosy with throwback wild-type coloration. Rosies are (mostly) fathead minnows or "tuffies" (Pimephales notatus) and are thought to have some genetic contribution from other Pimephales species.

Fatheads (including rosies) are pretty easy to breed in a tank, and foolproof in a pond. They are cave nesters, so you need to give them some flowerpots, lengths of pipe, rock piles, or other cave-like structures to breed in. The males color up and defend the nests aggressively. They're really pretty entertaining. They're also less likely to eat their young than are livebearers.
 
well here in casper we don't have rosy reds. it was in the comet goldfish feeder tank.
