Oddball/Predator Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have found cryptoheros Sajica to have a lot of personality.
There are lots of options for cichlids, I'd shoot for something that gets 7" max and avoid convicts, salvini, as they are particularly nasty

big eaters = wore waste = more work at maintaining a tank

Out of all the fish chosen, the oscar is not much of an oddball. I would pick a polleni over the oscar. It's much smaller in girth as well. Not sure how your pike characin would be treated though. Another fish that has personality like an oscar are pike cichlids (Crenicichla genus) like the belly crawler, saxatilis pike, or sveni pike.

Suggestions so far are great. Not a cichlid expert myself but gotta choose wisely as the other fish aren’t able to getaway or fight back. Plus the pike characins will just bang into the glass of stressed or picked on.

Keep some decor floating plants to reduce stress for the pike characin.

that’s what I planned on doing, he’s a bit finicky right now but I think he’ll come around

+1 on a paratilapia polleni, or a bleekeri if you can find one. Other options I would consider are roketiel or notiatus severum (much prettier than regular sevs.)
Red jewels could make a nice addition, Cuban cichlid, vieja heterospilius erm... what about some tropheus?

tropheus, with a pike characin and black ghost knife?

Pike Characin? Are we talking odoe here?
They stick with the African theme although I'm not an expert on the water parameters for rift lakes. It's a risk but I've seen mixed male tropheus do pretty well in communitys in the past. Bgk is gonna be at risk from any cichlid unless larger imo.
What's your opinion on it pal?

I think the red jewel and bleekeri may too aggressive for the bgk, i’ve read they need to be with less aggressive cichlids
