You are forgetting to tell everyone that you just removed all of your substrate 2 days ago and added another filter. What has happened is exactly what i was trying to tell you would happen. You have removed most of your biological bacteria from your tank and now it is recycling. That is why your water has a smell to it and it is probably cloudy as well. ----------------You need to get a test kit from your local LFS and see what kind of ammonia you have in the tank. If you can not afford one right now just take them some of your tanks water and they will test it for you. You need to find out how much ammonia you have before your fish start floating on top.

first of all, i did what you told me to do which was NOT a complete water change it was more like a 60%. Second, my water has been perfectly clear since i have added the other filter and done the change, im only here asking about odor so I suggest you chill before you want to act like i poured motor oil into my tank. I might be a tank noob but im not retarded, i follow the directions of those who know more than me but dont act like you mr. fish tank jesus. Btw, My fish are perfectly fine, active and healthy.

what fish do you have in your tank...
I had a 55 with 2 oscars a pacu 2 plecos and a cat fish. (for a grow out) i filtered with 1 sponge filter, 2 HOBs like yours, a canister ment for a 100 gallon tank, and i still had to do 2 water changes a week!!

I forgot, the turn over rate on that tank was about 21 times a hour!!:)

Adding another filter wouldnt remove his bacteria. If its a earthy, almost like soil after it rains it is normal. When I open my tank lids I get the smell then it goes away. Its its like a sulfer smell it would ammonia.
I just had a wierd thing happen, I noticed my water was getting hazy after I added a HOB to the tank to assist my XP3. The tank was already cycled and I never let my Nitrated go above 20ppm. I water changed yesterday with a 25% change and it still was hazy. Today I cleaned my canister and it the foam and carbon inserts were pretty gross. (I am ditching the carbon insert for more biomedia). I also did a water change today and I have clear water again but I still have a little bit of the earthy smell. My fish are doing great, active, eating, showing no signs of stress. So your probably okay.

on the HOB filters there is a little screen on the bottom of the filter intake if you remove that it helps with filtration.

I think whats happening for me atleast, I dont know how yours is set up, but I have the lid and the new HOB + Aerator are aggitating the water more which is pulling up the smell of the enviroment (a natural smell) and trapping it under the lid, so when I open it you get a wiff of it. Its really not bad smelling. Its kind of like when you are at the beach and it smells very oceanic from the waves breaking, but if you have ever been on a cruise or out at sea, it really isnt as strong.

the screen on the intake keeps chunks out of the impeller....
chunks + impeller = time for a new impeller

if you just removed your substrate theres a good chance your tank is going through a mini cycle.. test strips are worthless IMO get the liquid kit.. your LFS will test your water for free (if they dont get a new LFS)... might want to check for "uck" in the filter and a water 20-30% wont hurt...
