More water changes, especially vacuum gravel, use carbon, check for dead fish, and maybe purigen.

Yup yup, or don't eat so many refried beans.

one of my tanks have been getting a real bad odor every day on and off anyways to get rid of this?

Better tank maintenance will cure decomposing smells every time. Not being a smart ***, it's just the truth. A well maintained tank should not have a real bad odor.

Carbon will help smell as well.

Huh, I have a 55g. with 9 loaches in it I have 2 emperor 400 bio's onthere with the carbon and I change 25% water every 3 days and I have a smell in that tank. Seems to me some tanks smell, some dont. I do agree with the cleaning but there are some that just smell no matter what you do. It may also be from debris in the bottom of the filter I guess.

My tanks all smell like a lake or pond. Not a bad smell to me, it reminds me of swimming at camp. It's an earthy type smell.

Since I don't use carbon, I'll have to say water changes and gravel vaccuming. If you think the smell is coming from the filters clean/rinse them too. Filter maintenance is as important as tank maintenance.
