Odyssea CFS500 Disaster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i hate to say it but this looks like a user error. im pretty sure you just over tightened it. i have this filter and i love it for the price im actually thinking of getting the cfs700 since it comes with a uv light some this happened to you though

Either way I have overtightend the crap out of my eheim 2260 and just stripped the threads in the clamps.I have had problems with my 405 I had also, I got rid of it after a week. Then I got a Rena xp3 and never looked back. On eBay they are 120 shipped and I have never had any problems with them and very soild! Oh and they are rated for a 175 gallon tank.

I found a place in the laundry room to put it so I didn't have to resort to the garage. All the fish moved fine and all systems are go. One interesting thing that is saving my bacon until I get a new filter is that the intake on the pump in the filter can be detached and flipped upside down with the white sponge, thrown into the aquarium with an air line and an old lift tube from a UGF and I've got a sponge filter.

That truly blows.

Sorry to hear about it.

Water outside the tank is definitely a fish hobbyist's worst nightmare... :(

So this adventure has taken a bizar twist. Spent most of the day moving the aquarium, moving furniture, and pulling up the floor to find This....

That is not a very big wet spot. When I was finished with my aquarium yesterday evening I had filled the aquarium to the water line on the heater. After the spill it took 3, 5 gallon buckets full to fill the tank back to the water line on the heater so that I could plug it back in and keep the fish warm for the night. we mopped up maybe a gallon of water off the floor which leaves 14ish gallons AWOL....This is not 14 gallons of water. It's a daylight basement so the floor and walls up to 4 ft are solid concrete, there is nowhere for the water to go and yet it is gone.

What we did find that was worth cleaning up however was on the other end of the basement...

We had a toilet leak a tone of water about 6 months ago and thought we had cleaned the whole mess up, apparently not. We're not sure if it's Mold or just residue from the water flowing through the floor pads but were gonna play it safe and replace the pads and clean the floor with bleach.

One last shot of all the wood laminate floor stacked in the garage.

From the original post I was thinking a flaw in the plastic cover, maybe even a hairline crack that opened under pressure.
After seeing the pictures of the break around the tightening lug, I changed my mind.
Sorry man, but that looks like classic over tightening.
I agree that if thicker, better grade plastic were used you probably wouldn`t have had an issue.
But, you would have paid allot more money for the filter.
Not really a case of “you get what you pay for”, more like, if your going to go cheap, you really need to be careful.

I think a fluval 405 would make a nice replacement. At least with Hagen, you can sleep in peace next time.

I concede that I may have over tightened the lid. HOWEVER.....I only tightened the lid until it stopped leaking, and I did try loosening the lid after I had gotten a good seal and no go. So this is sort of a damned if you do damned if you don't situation where this filter (at least my copy) was incapable of maintaining a water tight seal.

I'm gonna get a new lid from the seller and try a few DIY things to improve it.

So the new lid came in the mail today and I was a bit surprised to see that the lid is black instead of the dark blue/gray that is the original lid. Also the plastic has a different texture and feels a bit stronger. I got some giant washers to help the fasteners spread out the pressure and I'm not gonna tighten it near as much as last time, I figure if it leaks a drop hear and there it's not a big deal. Lastly I got a 20 gallon tall tank that it's gonna be sitting in just incase it does bust open again.

the new lid is the darker one

It was user error. You should put a little petrolium on the lids o-ring before install. And only tighten the lugs with loose finger grips until they 'Slow down" in turning. If you understand that!?

Either way, I purchased one of these for my mothers 100 gallon oscar tank and it's been working great! For a while!
