Office tank

I would agree with either an african tank or planted dwarf cichlid tank, but since you claim to be a minimalist by nature you probably only really want one fish. Since you have dark gravel, my thoughts on a cichlid would be Herichthys carpintis(Pearlscale Cichlid, Green Texas Cichlid, Blue Texas Cichlid) . Only grows up to 20 cm, which is smaller than the 30cm Herichthys cyanoguttatus (Texas Cichlid, Rio Grande Cichlid). At 20cm it shouldn't effect water quality.

Do clients ever visit?

Nope...I am the Admissions Rep for HTI in Kentucky. I just do scheduling and paperwork in the office. I meet with students and parents elsewhere...

I like the Texas Cichlids...I will add them to my list for consideration. Thanks!

On the African front...I used to breed Brichardi and Lelupi...I believe the 55 is large enough to set up a colony of either...Just have to add all of my tuffa back in...

Decisions, decisions!

get some of the smaller specie of polypterids which will stay mostly at the bottom.
as for the top or middle water fish i will get back to you

planted community:D

Between leleupis and brichardis, I would go with the brichardis. The leleupis are more colorful, but the brichardis spend a lot more time out in the open. Of course you could always go with a mix of brichardis and one of the julidochromis species.

Having had more time to think about this, though, if I had a tank at work, I would want a fish with personality. That way whenever I get frustrated, I could talk to the fish and at least feel like he is paying attention to me.

I have to agree I would like to have a fish with personality. I really like Green Texas Cichlids. I have wanted one for a while. That is just my choice.GL

Let's see...dark sand and a few rocks...Here is what I would suggest:

5 - Xenotilapia ochrogenys
5 - Cyprichromis leptosoma
2 - Synodontis multipunctatus
Damn, those are some pretty fish.

You could have a Couple different pairs of Geos in a 55g.
