Well, first as for playoff teams that don't have stable QB's, ask Ewurm if he knows of any.

I didn't say Cassell wasn't good, I just said I don't want him, and I don't want any free agent QB, or a college guy for that matter. The Lions are bad all over the field, and QB is a spot that they can get by with what they have. If you have no offensive line, no QB will look good. And if you have a great QB on a great offense, you can score a lot, but if you have the WORST defense in the league, your still gonna lose. We need O lineman, D lineman, Linebackers, and so on before we even sniff a QB.

Well there's lots of ways to look at it. You will need to aquire the right players at all positions. There are a few positions that are more impact on a team then others these should be addresses as such. I watched a team in 2006 go 6 and 10 with a top ranked defense, not to mention they had a 1000y rusher in R. Brown. But because they had crap QBs(Culpepper, Harrington and Lemon) this offense was horrible. The year before they were one win away from division winning New England, but had a decent year from Gus Feroutte. Who this year, until injured, was doing a nice job for wurm's Vikings.

It's just my opinion that when you have a single player touch the ball on about 48% of the plays in the game. You want the best you can get, no matter what the level of the rest of your team.

Your not looking for a QB for just next year, but for the next decade.

Those are good exampls, but you hae to realize that this team is 6 wins away from being 6-10. They are about to go 0-16. You drop Peyton on this team and they'd have 3 wins. That doesn't get it done. I don't believe in having the QB be your first peice. I think we need to get defense, and offensive line help before a QB. The Vikings are a perfect example. They can run and stop the run, and thats good enough to get you into the playoffs. They have no QB, but now if you drop a good one in there like maybe Cassell or Mcnabb, your talking about challenging for the title.
I'm just saying, I watched this team a lot, and they are bad. Really friggin bad. BUt if they had anybody on defense worthwhile, they would have won a few of these games. They simply cannot tackle, at all. A QB will not help that. Not to mention with our offensive line, you could really get a rookie hurt by dropping him back there.
Also, I'd be interested in seeing where the NFL's top QB's got drafted by average. I'm not sold on the idea of having to draft a QB at the top as the only way of getting a franchise QB.

Well this could go on forever. Not sure where you're going with the 6 and 10 comparision. The 6 and 10 Dolphins had a defense ranked 4th in total yardage and 5th in points allowed. Yet only could manage 6 more wins then this years Lions and the D they have.

I will agee with ya though, the right QB would give the lions 3 wins this year. The right QB probably gives the Dolphins a least 5 more wins in 2006. If the Vikings had the right QB, even a heatlhy Feroutte they would surely make the playoffs.

Now there is no other single position on a team that one player can make that much of an impact. There are generally only 1 or 2 decent QBs available each year. In four years when the lions have turned things around yet are only an average team because they can't seem to get a decent QB you'll understand where I'm coming from.

Cassell is a steal, he is young, he is healthy, and he will only cost the team money, or would you rather they spend that money and bring back Culpepper. Take a look at the NFL there will be a dozen teams looking to upgrade at QB. If the Lions have a chance on signing a quality franchise QB I can't believe they would pass.

This is the foundation of my argument. Right now the Lions are so far from average, it's laughable. They are going to be 0-16, I hope if I continue to say that the significance of it will start to ring true. I wish they were in that spot because then it is a good idea to sign Cassell. That time is not now though. They have a long way to go before getting average, and the road does not start with a free agent QB.
Part of the problem is people who aren't from here don't really get how bad of a franchise the Lions are. They have 1, count em' 1, playoff win in 50 years. Friggin 50 years. The constant in that time is our owner. Think about this, on the brink of being the first team to go 0-16 in the history of the NFL, in an interview, our owner has already said that the guys he has appointed to the GM spot since firing Matt Millen, will be back next year. One of them, a guy named Martin Mayhew, was Millen's right hand man. He also said that he was undecided about what would happen with our coach, and that retaining him is more than a possibiltiy.
Oh yeah, we also tried the whole "franchise QB" thing through the draft not that long ago to help our struggling team, his name was Joey Harrington, ever heard of him?

Well again my point is, The chance to sign a heathy, young, decent quarterback such as Matt Cassell does not happen very often.

As said before, this arguement could go on forever. I do however feel that you are not even reading my posts, i.e. below.

Heard of Harrington? I posted about him within the last few posts. At what point did I promote drafting a franchise QB? I only pointed out that they may go after Harrell with the first pick and that it would be alot of money to pay for an unproven QB.

Ya they screwed up losing to the chargers, I think now they have to hope for the Cowboys to lose while they go out and beat the snot out of the Raiders

Fins just need to beat the Jets, but they will be playing in NY. I just hope Favre keeps sucking like he has been the last month or so.
