Coming home from being out of town for a week, the AC wasn't working very well so I had the windows open as well but it was still extremely hot in the truck. His 10 year old body just couldn't handle it anymore and he took his last breath in my arms. We were stuck in standstill traffic on the interstate so there was nothing I could do to help him. By the time I was able to pull off and try to get him some water it was about 10 minutes too late.
I just posted this to FB so I'll share it here as well.
Thank you everyone for all your thoughts, they mean more to me than you could realize. With everything I've had to go through this year this is definitely one of the hardest things. He was much more than a pet, but family and my best friend too. With the exception of my immediate family no one has been in my life longer than he was. He's what helped me get through these last 7 months. There were many days were the only reason I looked forward to going home at night was because I knew he would be there to greet me at the door with a smile on his face and a wag in his curly little tail. I can honestly say that having him there for me helped me get through those darkest days, and that no matter what happened I knew that I could always count on his unconditional love. He can never be replaced, and will be missed dearly by everyone. I know that there will always be a paw shaped hole in my heart from now on...

I'm so so sorry inglorious. That must have been terrible. I can't imagine losing my best friends. So sorry
