This conversation just blew my mind. Ive never thought of or heard someone NOT saying thank you when being paid for a job. When i pay someone i hire and they say thank you i assume theyre thanking me for giving them my business and choosing them. I think this applies more for contractors, gardeners, painters and other small businesses. when i get paid for something i also say thank you. Just how i thought it worked. My .2

In a company setting, typically my boss says thank you for the hard work, and I say thank you for the recognition during performance reviews...nothing wrong with that.

Of course I don't knock on the boss' door and say thank you for the paycheck every 2 weeks.

Id find it weird if you worked for a company and said thank you for your bi weekly or weekly pay check. Way different then saying thank you to a customer who's paying for a service
