it IS a different type of subtraction than what I learned...Maybe TOO many shortcuts being taught , to make it easier to pass tests that keep the schools funded?I am currently teaching him two digit multiplication. I don't really push him that hard.

Things have changed so much in school work. They want kids to do these weird methods and complex steps to reach and answer they got in their heads by just looking at the problem.
I tell my daughter find the answer however you want. If your answers are always right and they don't say show the work then doesn't matter. An A is an A.

lmao, i was helping the step daughter with homework and wondering why she was drawing squares and circles to solve a problem. i asked her isn't it faster to do it in your head and memorize the answers? she said yes but she HAS to do it this way and proceed to show me this bs draw and add crap. my mind was blown! she was getting them wrong by using the chart and drawings (not many, just 1 or 2 problems a page). i had to tell her to do it your teachers way and then double check the answer by doing it all over in your head
