well then there are about 12000 melanistic squirrels in camp grayling Michigan. I don't think its a genetic hiccup as much as a species there...there are literally thousands of them.

hello; a search for the squirrels on opposite rims of the grand canyon might prove of interest. I think one is called a kiab (my spelling). Results from the canyon getting too deep for the squirrels to mix.

Interesting how a decade or so away has changed the theory as to why these squirrels are so different. Hard to keep up with new knowledge if you are not looking.
