Massive pileup(67 vehicles) on I95 in the Baltimore Maryland area this morning.One truck was a fuel carrier with a full load and it burst into flames as it collided with another truck.....Icy road conditions are to blame.
Hello; 2016 is going out with a bang. My area was in the teens a little over a day ago. Now we are close to 50 degrees with a chance of severe thunderstorms overnight and a wintery mix and temps down again tomorrow. I am in Tennessee so will not likely have the very low temps and icy conditions they have in Maryland.
I have dealt with freezing rain a few times around here. Not able to drive and could not walk across a road, had to crawl across. Left a car in a ditch and hiked to a motel. Could walk in the snow on the side of the road. Passed a cattle truck off the road on it's side. The cows were thrashing and bellowing in pain. Nothing to do about it. Even a jeep with chains on all four wheels was having trouble.
Been on the interstate in freezing rain once. Got passed by a big SUV as I was driving slowly. A few miles later he was off in the median. Ice formed on my wipers so thick I had to stop a few times to break it away. Car was covered in a sheet of ice maybe half an inch thick. Got lucky in that a Highway dep. truck pulled onto the interstate ahead of me and was laying down a sand/gravel mix. This was in North Carolina south of Ashville.
I have been lucky in that never involved in one of these massive pileups. Saw on the news that folks were stuck on an interstate at Indianapolis IN for hours due to ice. Been to Indianapolis many times in the winter and have known bad winter weather but not this early in the season. Heck it is not winter yet.
I guess then that that was a more fitting description for the fiery crash on I 95.
hello; during the winter season not quite a year ago (early 2016) A long section of I-75 near me was shut down for a long time. I believe it was between the Caryville exit ( about 30 miles from me) and the Corbin KY exit. Not sure how long but think it may have been days. The National Guard eventually was called out to go and rescue some of the people
hello; To be more precise I-75 was shut down n the same area twice in 2016. Once in the winter for snow as I already mentioned and later in the spring due to a massive landslide. This is the Jellico Mountain area and has been prone to slides for years and is also hard to deal with if we get enough snow. The shut down last winter was perhaps the worst (at least as far as I am aware) we have ever had.
The spring Mt landslide closed the interstate for several weeks. I had semi trucks along the road in front of my house in a nearly constant stream. I am about a mile from an intersection they had to deal with and the trucks were backed up past me a few times.
I have a wood burning stove in now, the second cold season for it, and plenty of aged wood. I may have to sit around in the dark but should be warm.
