Official Off Topic Discussion Thread #1

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How things are dealt with here in the future is not an old argument. I'm more than happy to leave old arguments, from past discussions, in the past. Are you?

I might have a bit more to say on this subject compared to others because I have been here for well over a decade. And while I have been involved in my fair share of heated debates over the 12 years that I have been part of this forum, I have always been willing to leave the past in the past - no grudges, no hate. I can hand someone their azz one day, and buy them a drink the next. Eventually I'll forget that it even happened - ask Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 . lol

My comments here are directed at the current state of this fish forum, and it's future. A lot of forums have dried up and withered away over the past several yrs, I don't want to see that happen to MFK. And just for the record, I do not believe that the Lounge is the problem, and I could be wrong but I don't think that Rob does either.

IMHO it's some of the behaviour that takes place in the Lounge, and the attitudes that begin in the Lounge, and then spread south into the fish keeping side of this site. Look at how y'all talked to Hendre in that recent thread. Sure the all caps subject was no big deal, and sure Hendre might have got carried away (he's young, and new at this) , but he's still a moderator here and he still deserves everyone's respect. Go back & look how you all spoke to him. There was a time, before most of you were members here, that you would have been slapped a warning, and some maybe a temp banning for speaking out to a mod like that.

The giant sized memes is another example - fine and dandy in the Lounge, IMO it's juvenile to constantly post those in the rest of the forum - including this thread. It makes one look like they are 10 yrs old. Is that the image the Loungers are going for? Junior high mentality? Hey no problem, all I ask is that it stays in the Lounge, not every fish thread where one of you feel like being the class clown. I'm not the only member here that feels that way, trust me on that.

Why we have a grace period anyone want to talk about fish food or tank size?

See above, a classic example of what I am talking about, closely followed by the junior high mentality meme.

Imo the behavior its the behavior that takes place in GA that spreads through out the forum notthe lounge.

P PYRU post was made in an off topic discussion in the loinge poor example and funny coming from someone who routinely calls people idiots and insults there intelligence when ever they are disagreed with.

Coming from me a newer member this probably falls on deaf ears and judging by likes you recieve even after you were told to take it to pm only confirms the suspicions some have.

That said i wonder how this would be recieved if everyone voiced their concerns on the open forum instead of pm's and off site.

Please don't quote me with this petty stuff of yours. Its just a light hearted joke if that's a problem then I don't need lounge privileges.

I really don't understand why you or anyone else is still talking about this. Things are changing you're either going to adapt or move on. It's that simple...this sour puss talk is killing the off topic anyway.

As an "OG" I would think you would want to set a better example. You're info is usually good but you're attitude is that of a bitter old man. Instead of being rude and condescending all the time perhaps a nicer more understanding approach would serve the forum better. I'm sure I'm not the first to mention that over the yrs.

I am the one who replied to hendre's posts in the thread that was closed, and there was no disrespect unless I missed something back there."Speaking out?"...what was said to him was nothing that wouldn't have been said to anyone else at any other time in the history of this forum thst I can recall.I wasn't aware that so called "speaking out" was verboten and answering a mod's snide comment was infraction or ban worthy.
Speaking of hendre, its interesting that just about every active moderator has chimed in and had their say here except him.Everyone has their opinion and mine is that that thread was closed because of the feedback that he received, regardless of what else has been said about the thread.
I dont intend to go back and forth with anyone on here about the subject,I didnt intend to post at all but I just wanted to post an answer to the comments of so called disrespect to a moderator.

Hello; I guess you may mean well but you are way off base with this comment. I can only truly speak for my self but do think the others likely were teasing Hendre just as I was. Hendre and I have teased each other over the last few years. He sometimes calls me the old man and makes jokes about my age among other things. On the site I consider him a friend. My comments were in jest and I will be surprised if Hendre Hendre took it any other way. I cannot say for sure of course but figure he will speak for himself. If I somehow offended him I will make my apologies. I do respect Hendre and am proud to have him a part of the site.

To be sure RD you have ragged on me several times. If memory serves the first time was shortly after I joined this forum. I think I made a comment about sniffing my tanks and you jumped me about it. I gave back in kind as well. I do not consider you a friend but you have experience and knowledge which is a boon to this site. You do snipe at lots of folks and near as I can tell have ongoing feuds with several members. Pretty often jumping in and escalating the arguments your self. To be fair I have done the same and have made an effort the last few months to do much less of that. I do not know which of us is the more guilty but neither are in a position to lecture others.

This most recent subtopic within this thread had died down for a lot of hours and I felt some of us were indeed ready to put it behind us. Aside from the implication you made that I was being meant to Hendre, I was also ready to let it go.

I saw that your comments got likes from two Mods. Not sure what that means.

Having gone over many of the recent posts, as well as some very older ones, I feel I must raise an important point that has become glaringly obvious.

It appears that some (mostly ‘middle-aged’) members are again lamenting the so-called ‘degradation’ of MFK). And again (ad nauseam), blaming this on newer members, snowflakes and various ‘police’, who they claim are killing discussions, supposedly chasing away valued, older members etc. Lmao...

This lame argument is completely indefensible by any logical assessment and anyone who promotes it is embarrassing themselves.

Let me clearly demonstrate this:
Some of these MAM’s (middle-aged members, which refers to length on MFK, not age), also go on to tell us how they used to get so many PM’s from Mods during the ‘good old days’. I’m going to take a wild guess and say these PM’s were in response to some questionable behavior on some thread(s), not just saying hello, how are your ancient fish doing today?

So my main question is, just as a learning experience for the rest of us -- exactly what kind of behavior was earning you all those PM’s from Mods back in the ‘good old days’?? Now be frank, was it ever because you were getting out of hand on threads, insulting people etc., or did that just not happen back then – when current newer members et al weren’t even around?

In fact that last question is easily answered by going to the very first page of this thread started in 2013. I bring your attention specifically to the 1st and 13th posts.

The OP in 1st post specifically mentions: “Fresh new start. Just please play within the rules Lounge Rules”. Gee, without all the newer members et al not even around, what in the world would prompt him to say that I wonder…??

Then on 13th post another members states: “And with people getting their proverbial panties in a knot thinking every supposed slight is against them and makes a formal TOS complaint, which even though without any merit is acted upon, how is this going to end differently?

Apparently the more things change, the more they stay the same lol.

So I really, really wish people would stop blathering on about the behavior of newish/members/snowflakes/police being the sole, or even main reason for (supposedly) bringing this site down. Not only is this an injustice it’s a blatant misdirection that should be exposed for being exactly what it is: scapegoating.

New, medium or old, ALL members of MFK fit into the equation of its success or not, where we take it from here and .the new position of Admin regarding TOS, is completely up to us.

Y'all are >< this close to getting this thread permanently shut. This discussion came to a reasonable conclusion yesterday: people had concerns, I addressed them.

Now y'all are going in on each other over old grievances.

This needs to stop.

I'll reopen the thread in an hour or so.

Personally, couldn't give a crap about the lounge. Stay or go, not bothered. I don't really use it.

RD. RD. and I have had some quite heated arguments on this site when I first joined.
Looking back I think it was mostly over things that were more our opinion rather than proven fact.
You could say RD was not on my list of favourite forum members.
Since then I have found that we tend to agree on most fish related topics and I grew to respect him for his wealth of knowledge. I also liked his no nonsense approach to members giving poor advice, or keeping fish in poor conditions.
From my perspective RD, although direct, is not the catalyst for most long windid arguments.
I think there are members here, that I guess may be quite chummy in the lounge(I, don't know, just guessing) That all stick together and challange good advice just because they don't like the person giving it.
I actually think he would make a very good mod.
Speaking of mods, I'm glad I'm not in their shoes when it comes to making the right choice in making the forum a better place to visit.
I imagine nothing has changed in this regard nor do I think it ever will.
People will always collide.
I think the mods do a good job overall but some things can't be permanently fixed. They always re suface eventually. I don't think locking a thread is an insult or a crime. I thing it often calms things down until the next time.
