That's cute, but where are the horns? And I think that it's actually an Emu x Cow cross...an Emow...they're known to be much more docile and easily controlled.

A real Cowstrich is a bird of a different feather...:)

Hello; Not too worried about mutant cows. I do have a pasture along one side of my property. Will hold up to 20 or so cattle at one time. They are curious but generally calm. I can mow next to the fence, and they just calmly watch.
A thing is they are big and heavy. This past year one got out and was in my back yard. It had been raining. The hoof prints were several inches deep in the soft ground. Farmers get hurt around them. Get pinned against objects, stepped on and such. Cows do not have to be anything other than big & heavy to run over you if they panic.

Hello; Here is a story which puzzles me to a degree. Not entirely to be sure. There are coyotes in my area. They take outside pets is reported by word of mouth. They could take a child and would if the opportunity fell into their path.
I do not recall knowing of coyotes being around back in the 1950's when I was young. Same for black bears. I get that early pioneers went to some effort to kill out such predators. Was that right and proper back in the day? Now we get to the reason I posted the story.

The gist of the story is some folks do not like that wild coyotes are being killed in an area. Some want them to be trapped. Is that even practical to do? Others apparently want them left alone. One woman claims she lost her beloved cat to a coyote yet wants them to roam in the area.

There are black bear in my neighborhood. I have seen the prints. Others have seen the bears. Did not happen by natural means. They have been introduced by authorities. I get it as I live in a somewhat rural area. Not rugged and isolated but with surrounding woodlands and a national park close by. Those that like the idea may not all be in faraway cities. May be a few who like such living close by. For some reason there are more reports of bear attacks of late. I can only guess as to the cause if such reports are not being exaggerated.

Hello; I actually am on the side of pet owners on this one. More specifically one particular aspect of the council ruling. That part being that initial owners of the dogs will be held responsible for the dogs even after the dog is sold and i guess dumped somewhere. The dogs will have been "chipped" at a point while owned by the original owner.

The case followed a stray pittbull type dog and became a year long thing. The gist as i understand it is the dog was a stray and is on a restricted list. I think this must be in England. I am not able to clarify why the dog wound up homed in a special place rather than being put down. I do recall from years ago that in the USA there are lawyers who swooped into small towns after a fatal dog attack and strived to prevent the dog(s) in question from being put down. My guess is the same sort of thing happened in the linked case.

My stance on dangerous dog types is a side point in this post. It does not make sense to make an original owner labial legally for a dog they got rid off. One possible exception would be if the original owner dumped the dog. But if the dog was sold then it ought to be the responsibility of the new owner.

In my area folks dump dogs from time to time. Not known of such for a few years but it has happened. The initial thought is to feed the hungry dog but we have to be careful with that. Seems the liability laws attach to such Samaritans if the dog bites someone. We can claim the dog is not really ours and we were just feeding it because we felt sorry for the poor animal.

My neighbor and I have been feeding a stray cat for a few days. It is staying under my neighbors shed. I hope it makes it. i see it coming out of the cattle field next door. The hunting ought to be good. It is time for the mice to try to move into my basement as cold weather approaches. I have already set out traps. Only caught one mouse so far. I note the cat does not eat the food I set out every day. Guess only on days it does not catch a fresh mouse.

Too bad my neighbor two houses over is determined to kill the blacksnakes. I did have a blacksnake which would live in my basement a couple of years but have not seen any this past summer. The neighbor's house is infested with rodents. He asked me to check the attic and i found mouse and rat sized droppings plus hoes in the soffit. Also dropping in the kitchen. They leave food around in plates and on surfaces. Suggested a clean up and better storage for dry foods but have not been back in a couple years. Anyway the rodents attract the black snakes to his place and he kills them. I tried to explain how the snakes are good guys and not venomous. Did not cut any ice with him. He is an MD fro what that is worth.

For two falls I managed to take pictures of a black snake climbing the wall of my house. I think it get in near the powerhead. I found it in th basement one spring. But did not see it last fall and not this fall so far. DSCN8962.JPGDSCN8961.JPG

In our neck of the woods, wild cats appear to be a bigger problem than wild dogs.
