On and off . . . On and off . . . On and off . . .

I had to hoist the body to trim bits of the fiberglass firewall, twice. I had to trim fender bolts. Eventually the body is set down. Almost. I was hoisting the nose by a steel body brace, which hits the frame. Once I remove that I can let it down the last 1/2”.

The hoist is back in the boatyard. I played garage rodeo, things are straightened up a bit, and now we can park in the garage again.

The camera distorts everything. This is just enough room to park a Camry.

Clearance in the garage was pretty tight, and I had this body cart sticking out in the way. It was oversized and so I put together a smaller one and rearranged the garage a little more.

I also pushed the Volkswagen out into the cul-de-sac, turned it 180, and put it back in the garage nose first.

So I made this silver bracket to reinforce the body back when there wasn’t much frame on this car, and it was a real convenient point to hoist the fiberglass body.

Unfortunately it sits on the frame and must be removed, also every wire in the front is zip tied to it right now. Fortunately it will be completely unnecessary now that I have a frame to bolt the body to.

Hello; Another bear attack. This time on a large group of at least eleven. Some school kids and their teachers on a hike. Reported to be a grizzly. Add this to the reports out of Japan. are we in a Stephen King story?

Look Bella Coola up on a map. Mix drought, a shortage of berries, and some hungry pre-hibernating bears into the equation, and bad things can happen.

Life is a Stephen King story.

No kidding. I assume that Grizzlies, like Black Bears, will come to a predator call; I've had numerous encounters with Blacks while I was squalling on a call meant to attract coyotes. The bear hears the sound of an injured or dying animal and usually comes in fast and with purpose. It'll definitely get your attention.

There are areas in BC and Alaska where hunters in pursuit of small coastal blacktail deer must be on constant alert for Grizzlies, who have been habituated to equate the sound of a rifle shot with a free meal. They come in to steal the hunter's kill. Again, they don't come to ask politely; they charge in and grab the food. Getting in the way is not wise.

Taking a bunch of noisy children into the bush...setting them up with hot dogs and sandwiches in a noisy jabbering bunch in a wilderness area populated by numerous Grizzlies...during a season when the bears are in a hyperphagic state, i.e. they literally can't stop eating as they fatten up for winter...sounds like just about the dumbest thing one could possibly do. Ice this cake of idiocy by not having anyone on hand with a firearm for protection and you have the makings of...well, exactly the sort of tragedy that happened. :(

From what I read, the teacher/s had bear spray, I guess it wasn’t too effective in this case.
Another recent attack, on an Elk hunter, not far from one of the buildings I work at.

Some of these bears are also travelling with cubs this time of year, some that are 2-3 yrs old, which can make for some serious trouble as well.

Unless you have experienced the size and power of a mature grizz, it’s hard to imagine. Here’s a couple of the largest, and most dominate males found west of us in Banff National Park. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/the-boss-bow-valley-grizzly-bear-split-lip-9.6979193

Check those claws out. Ouch.

Years back while out fishing the Clearwater River, less than an hour west of us, I was showing my wife how to tell the difference between the paw prints of a Black Bear, vs a Grizzly. A mature Black Bear’s claws will end approx 1” beyond the toe, a mature Grizzly claw will be 4-5” beyond each toe. I was using fresh Grizzly tracks in the mud to point out the difference. Pretty sure she pee’d herself a little bit. Lol

I've used bear spray a few times and would never, ever rely on it unless there were no other choice. It has varied from amazingly effective...on a bear that was so discombobulated that he ran blindly into the side of my steel barn and left a giant permanent dent in it...to having literally no effect whatsoever.

If I plan on using bear spray, it's held in my left hand...and a shotgun is held at the ready in my right.
