For now this sounds obvious but can you feed a little less, or smaller amounts at a time so there's less waste?

When the Cteno gets big enough to be in there with them, I guarantee you he'll help out too. They're huge food hogs.
 
Yes I've cut back on the food I've been offering but there are a few pieces that always seem to not be found abd then I find a ball of fuzz in my tank the next couple of days

Any snails or big gravel in the tank. I see the sand though. Would hold feeding it and see if the lump advances on thru.
