There is nowhere to hide over here, my desk is a dark wood so he'll be an easy find :)

The hard part is when they just and you cant even find it cause its stuck somewhere or crawled underneat somewhere.

Our fish can die from soo many things like aggression, disease, ect ect its a horrible feeling losing one in this manner as its such an easy thing to avoid

I can imagine. I'm keeping tabs on him all day and not sleeping much at the moment so he or she will be well monitored till I get a lid

At what size can they usually be sexed?

We were able to determine the sex of my polli when she was about 5 inches. I could always tell with my Moke that I got at 6 inches.

Often it's not the brief time out of water, it's the fall onto a hard surface that kills the fish.

Great looking little fella :)

O

My volta endli fell 5' from the top of the tank to the floor and still survive.

Yikes, that would have been tragic if you lost the Volta to a leap!

Not sure your floor surface but I've lost a few Channa sp. assam over the years during water changes while the lids were off. Startled by my work in the tank, leapt, then hit their head on the floor (linoleum covered cement so pretty hard) Even though I was right there, and they spent at most 15 seconds out of the water, respiration had totally ceased and they were dead. Tried to revive in the tank to no avail :(

As snakeheads are both tough as nails and can survive out of water for a good while, I concluded it was the impact that killed them.
