I just got a 180 and I see a good many people on here with silver/black aros in 180s. I would really like to get one (pref a black because to my knowledge and from the stickies, they tend to stay a little smaller than silvers). Is a 6x2 footprint enough for an aro for long term? Or at least a few years? I know everyone says that they will upgrade to a larger tank, and my plans are to build a plywood some day, but that's just plans now. What do you think? Would you? Or how many of you keep aro's in a 6x2?

i would limit to one aro in the tank since it will be your first aro. 180 sounds good depending on the size you get it at and should last you a year and a half? just a guess. as for blacks, kinda hard to come by this time of the year, but you should be able to find a silver easily

Theres a black at my lfs for $220 and a silver or $70. Both about 5-6". I just want to know how many ppl if anyone has kept an aro in a 180 long term.

Get a Jardini, just in case you can't upgrade in time. They can live in a 180 for much longer than a black or silver.

The lfs aroud me also has one as well, but I want to have some sort of community. I'm afraid to take the chance with a jar!

Also if I do decide to go for an aro, should I grow it out in a smaller tank? Currently my tanks are 55,90,150 and 180. I was planning on selling the 90 to my friend in return for some cash and an fx5 so that I could run 2 fx5's on the 180. Or would it be ok to put it in the 180 right away?

That is what makes a Jardini tank so amazing though. Going through the trouble to have a tank that works with them. A really cool tank idea would be to have a jardini at the top and a school of fish in the middle.

Like a jardini with discuss in a planted tank for a challenge.

Or silver dollars

Or tiger barbs- nothing can ever catch them.

That may just be one of the sexiest ideas I've heard yet! I've never had a school of silver dollars ( I tried 6 for giggles in my 90 and they got destroyed in minutes lol) Losing some discus to a crazy jar would be expensive! What about rays for the bottom with that setup?!?

A black would last 2-3 years. Basicly the black arowana would last in that 180 until it's 24" long. Once it gets bigger than 24" you need to upgrade. FYI I have a 6" black arowana for only $140.

rays would look nice but get a male motoro they don't grow that big ;)
