OHF Filters in Asia, US?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you don't like the look of them, you could always cover the compartments in the black sticky background (called oyama paper on other sites). This would also be beneficial for the filtration as it provides a completely dark environment which the bacteria prefer.

Some people have been comparing them to sumps, which I disagree with as the media is not submerged ... more like a trickle tower.

FWIW

P.s. I used to run an OHF on my 90, but now I've got a sump on my big tank and a cannister & HOB on my planted 55..

I've made several of these and they work good, also made above tank sumps (they don't need as big of a pump 'cause of lower head pressure).

I have a version of that kind of filter on my feeder quarantine tank.
I built it myself out of a graduated cylinder ( I work at a laboratory equipment company).
It seems to work well, but its too ugly for any of my main tanks.:)

well when i got to Taiwan i didn't like them, the more i saw them the more i wanted to use one. and now that i do use them i love them.

as for the light/space issue, they are not used for planted tanks as there is way too much aeration so you dont really need to use lots of lights to see the fish properly.

With thye issue of being awkward to work around i put mine as far back as i can and that gives me enough space to work in my tanks as you can clearly see in the pic of the 100gal tank with the smaller OHF.

I would look around Wal Mart or such places for suitable containers to make it from. Would be very easy to construct.

if you want i can take pics to show you a break down of components. it is real easy to make when you see how they are put together.
