I have four boxes on a base unit.
The top one starts with my filter floss-i like this because its cheap and easy to replace.
The second tier is bio-balls or ceramic rings.
Third layer is the same as the second.
the fourth layer is a sponge with ceramic rings to fill the gaps to maximise filtration capacity-I could cut the foam to size but figure i have enough .
In the base unit it is loaded with bio-balls and is about 2/3 submerged.
The pump is the kind easily and cheaply available here-can just as easily be run of a standard powerhead of your choice.
then there is the spray bar that goes across the length of the filter to distribute water evenly-pvc with drilled holes could work just as well and be half the price.
before the pump intake is a catch to stop any large debris from clogging the pump. and the top of the boxes are grooved so the spray bar fits in snugly as not to move and close flush with the lids on.
any questions please ask.
PS. i know its dirty but it is almost time for the big clean. in a week or two. i used a box of smokes as a size reference.
pretty cool but what is the advantage over a sump? you could have that setup on another tank under the display tank and gain more water volume and clean up the top of the display tank. i guess im getting at is its a sumpless sump?
the stand the tank is on is a cabinet that is not designed for a sump so this was the next best thing. it works well and is very easy to maintain and clean.
I'm just lazy and really busy lately thats why it looks like it does.
i got it as a complete set from the previous owner. but to put it together again took about 20 including cleaning it. they are really easy to assemble and take apart.
Unsure what your keeping in the tank but your filter looks like overkill to me. Not that overkill is a bad thing but 2 seperate systems/pumps is the way to go if you want overkill. These are trickle filters remember so you would only need one to do a good job of biological filtration. I am talking ONE box, not one layer! I would suggest a sponge layer for mechanical filtration instead of the white wool but it looks like you have a system your happy with which works.
its on a 145gal thats heavy stocked at the moment, in it is 7 full grown siver dollars, growing out a 10" pangassius for my 268gal, growing a 12" royal knife for the same tank, a GT, a blood parrot i want to get rid of, one full grown choclate pleco, one 11" common pleco, poly palmas 9-10", poly del 6", poly lap 9-10" and 2 raphael cats.
this setup with weekly 40-50% water changes keeps my fish healthy and happy.
