What would be an optimal sized stream tank for some darters and dace? I'd like to add another tank to my basement this spring and since I built my 600 a smaller 100G or so would be a breeze to build. Obviously a long tank since it will be a stream tank. We are about to go through inventory in 2 weeks so we will be throwing out a lot of glass around 1/4"-3/8" of various sizes.

always the longer the better!!
and if you don't need the width (ie your gars) then 18" is more than enough IMO
and with smaller fish i think 18" is a decent height too

.. as for all that spare glass ... you could always build some large tanks for your fellow Ohioans :naughty: ;) :naughty:

I would think a tank about 10 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 1 foot tank would be AMAZING. Shorter could work as well, but i think 10 feet would be extraordinary for small stream fish, and look really great. Open top would be cool as well, with outflow at one end, and inflow at the other, with a high turnover, so it would be as realistic as possible.

^Thats what i would do, honestly. But i guess most lumber comes in 8 foot sections, so 8 feet long might be better. Anyways, that would be ideal, IMO. You could go smaller and still have it be awesome. Good luck either way :) BTW, my dimensions would come out to "only" around 150 gallons, but look freakin huge, i think. Also, how big is the space this is going into?

i knew it wouldnt fit or something :P

Anyways, i woudl go as long as possible, but make it only 12 - 15 inches deep, but 24 inches wide. Some tall stones that reached out the top would be awesome, maybe with mosses on them. Driftwood too. An all out biotope would be great :)

just to clerify (because i dont know much about smaller natives) ... what are the sizes of the fish you are going to put in? just dace and daters or other natives?

sand or gravel bottom? driftwood? plants?

Go for the 72'' long and 24'' wide the extra width really expands your options for fish and a little extra current will make for it not being as long as your other options

Glad to hear a fellower Ohioan is going monster. And its a plus your from Cleveland!!!

Anyhow I like the measurements for the 135
