Ohio River Monster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
UPDATE:

We went this morning with some better gear. We lost several fish. I landed the only paddlefish of the day. She wasnt much longer then last nights fish but being female she was considerably bulkier and had a belly full of eggs and easily went 50lbs. Drum and skipjack also made up the days catch.

Great fish

I thought it is illegal to snag paddlefish?

It is illegal to snag any fish in Indiana, although Paddlefish may be taken from the Ohio River.

When you fish the Ohio River that borders KY and IN you follow KY guidelines.

It is legal to snag them and believe it or not there is an 8 fish per person per day limit!!

Pretty much.

Today I was using my Penn SW outfit. Its light for SW and has a high capacity spinning reel with 12lb line and a 6.6ft rod that is long and limber enough to let me cast far but still has plenty of back bone.

Since it would be pretty boring just to throw out bare hooks I did this:
I first tied on a treble hook with a polymar knot leaving about 2ft of extra line, About a foot down the extra line (if you know how to tie polymar knots you know what extra line Im talking about) I tied a second treble hook. At the end of the extra line I tied on a chartuse 1/2oz jig head with a 3" white curly tail grub. The grub is used as a weight for snagging but will also catch other fish in the mean time like white bass, hybrids, skipjack, drum, and what knot.

We threw our rigs as far as we could into FAST current and slowly retrieved them back. When ever we felt a bump wed rip the hell out of it. Needless to say you loose a lot of rigs really fast but that is all part of it.

so you snag these guys? no bait? how do you snag them? just cast out line and yank back?

Paddlefish are filter feeders so bait is out of the question. So the only way to catch them is by net or snagging them with a large trebble hook- not really the most sportsman like way to catch a fish IMO.
