Ohio River Monster

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
seems kinda difficult to snag a fish.. so i guess you just chunk it out there and hope to hook up to one of them beast.. do you find them first and begin casting or cast and wish for the best?

I've heard a lot of people snagging fish out of the Ohio...I always wondered about that.

Nice catch JD!! I love those fish and I bet that was one hell of a fight.

i love fishing and fish all the time. BUT, these aren't carp. just cause they are there, doesn't mean you have catch and kill them. with a treble hook that size, releasing is as good as killing. grab some bread, carp fight just as hard, and you're supposed to kill them. aren't paddles a threatened species?
go kill some carp.

NICE!!! yes you sure can eat them!!!! and there pretty damn good too! i have land in southern MO and i go down there during snagging season every spring to the spill way and you can pull in 5 footers easy!!! massive spoonies!! :D

These fish are not threatened at all! There is an 8 fish per person per day limit!!!

Oh and the fish dont die after you snag them probably 90% of the time. We used size 1 treble hooks so they dont go in deep.

Sporting? You try catching a 50lb fish with a small hook in fast current on 12lb line!!

These fish run so thick down there that people using regular lures to catch other fish end up snagging them as well!

im not sayin anythin is wrong.. just wanna know how you go about doin it, like how do you find them and know where to cast and snag.

Actually its pretty easy. if your snagging in spillways you can see them from above and if a good enough caster you can cast from up top. there not hard to miss at 4 plus feet long. and so much fun to reel in! :D

Fishing addict, I wasnt directing my commet towards you.

We went again this morning and FINALLY for the first time in about 6 months they werent letting out much water so the water was way down. When this happens the fish are forced in smaller areas. Of course it is still relatively hard to fish cause the area isnt THAT small. It goes from 1/3 of a mile wide to maybe 1/8 of a mile. Anyway the fish were EVERY WhERE. When the water is this way we like to target our favorite fish..hybrids and stripers. We only caught one hybrid that went like 3lbs. I put it on the stringer but my stringer came undone and he got loose. I lost possibly my largest hybrid/striper ever. The catch of the day was my buddies giant channel cat that had to have gone at least 30#. We got a whole mess of drum, smaller cats (some still pushing 10lbs), buffalo, hi-fin buffalo (never caught them before), skipjack, and a gar. I wish we had a waterproof digital camera but we dont...

We could have caught some paddlefish as we actually saw quite a few but didnt mess with it as we were wanting some hybrids for a good fish fry!!

Mod please feel free to move this to the fishing forum as Im just going to keep updating this thread as we fish....
