There sill still be residual oil in the tank. It is best to actually clean it out of the tank first.

Dish soap FTW!!!

Do not pressure wash it! Imagine the stress that would put on, not only the seams, but the glass itself!

ok so i bought this fish tank with the stand and filter dirt cheap the problem is the guy spilled oil in it ...so now i bought it and you cant see the oil but when you fill it up you can see a little bit .. so will this affect the fish and whats the easiest way to take it off ... thank you

So nobody asked the important questions yet, so I'll do it. What type of filter/pump do you have? Did the guy say that he spilled oil in it or did you just see it on the surface? From the way you worded your post, I have a feeling your pump may be leaking oil. The two above questions will answer that.

Oh, by the way, for everyone on the west side of the Pond, washing up liquid is dish soap.

Anyway, if it is just a film on the surface of the water, the easy way to take care of it is to float a paper towel(s) on the surface.

Set it on fire this will burn the oil off:nilly:...lol just kidding...I would just wash with dish soap or a bleach and water mixture and then rinse very well several times.

Use brake cleaner, the kind that says "leaves no residue" its mostly xylene. That will strip the oil off the tanks surfaces and you can wipe it out with paper towels until the tank is degreased.

Now, I have no idea what brake cleaner will do to the silicone.... it might loosen it from the glass.

but it'll degrease the tank for sure.
