ok to turn of filter at night?

Emperor 400... I have 5 of them in my livingroom!

Is it s mechanical noise or a water noise?

Spin the spray bars so that they point almost straight down. They just need to catch the edge of the bio wheel.

Pull out and reset the impeller housing a few times, while the filter is running. Just move it around a bit see if that can quiet it.

I'm not sure what he/she can do about the overflow though...I'm guessing it feeds into a sump/wet dry system?

I can't sleep without the sound! LOL I always had some kind of tank since I was 8. I love the sound of the filter. P.S. Trying sleeping in Marine barracks. 3

Same the day I came home I would fall asleep to the sound my mom tells me

If you turn the filter off the biowheels will dry out killing off the bacteria that colonizes on surface of the bio wheel.

This could be one of the top 5 stupidest questions ever....

BTW there are no stupid questions, just stupid people who complain about other's questions.

Its the emperor 400 hat makes all the noise. I also have a homemade overflow that makes a bit of noise id like to silence

A new Emperor 400 without the pull tab in the middle of the back lid or the old type with the pull tab? Fixing the "old" type is pretty easy, fixing the new type requires snips or a dremel (I just fixed the one in my son's room today after the same complaint this morning from him, techincally his is the new version Penguin 350 but same concept ). How long has the filter been running and how long since you last broke it down to clean it?

there are many solutions to this problem move the tank sleep somewhere else muffle the noise earplugs many many thing but turning it off isnt one of them good luck OP

From personal experience with one of my filters failing for about 6 hours I wouldn't recommend doing so. That filter even after I cleaned it, wreaked so bad that I went out to grab a replacement till the smell went away. That same filter works till this day and has not failed me again since.

Hello; Have you tried to deal with the filter systems to make them run more silently? I have had filters with impellers become loud and have been able to adjust the impeller assembly to cut down on the noise.
Sometimes it simply required turning the filter on and off and repositioning the impeller assembly slightly several times to cut down on the noise.
Other times the small rubber pads on the ends of an impeller shaft were slightly undersized and apparently allowed the assembly to wobble and be loud. In this case I have been able to lessen the noise by finding a way to shim or replace the rubbe end pads. This is a tricky fix and i never found a quick or easy solution.
Impeller assemblies can become too worn or broken in some way and must be replaced.
Have you cleaned the filter ?? I have had bits of gravel or snail shells get into the impeller area and cause noise. The magnet can pick up tiny bits of metal.
A bubbler can be made less noisy with gang valves to adjust the flow or by replacing the sirstone to produce finer bubbles. An old stone will eventually begin to produce larger bubbles.
I muffle the air pump with open cell foam or have hung them with rubber bands or by small ones by the power chord. If you can find some way to do this without cutting off the air intake or holding in the heat will help the pump to last longer .

I've thought of doing the same thing to my 4 overhangs but don't do that for the fact being that it's not gonna make anything better I woul advise you to put a towel over it so you could muffle the sound a little better to make you sleep better
