Old IT

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one of those dats with the different number of bars on each side of the body,on one side there are the three almost ST like bars and the multiple bars on the other side. This dat was given to me by a vendor on here some time ago,it has only one eye which is on the 3bar side but it is one of my more active dats. The odd patterns is what I look for in indos nowadays.

Phulltank, once again all the new schoolers are reminded that people were keeping all these TRUE MONsTERs years ago. Even before MFK!!

Krichardson, I agree. I feel the same about looking for "odd" patterns, or uncommon unusualties on (any) fish these days. Nowadays, it's hard to be UNIQUE in this hobby?!!

I'm a new school and a dat newbie. I love these tigers. My Mom went to visit me this Christmas and saw my tank. She told me that my dad collected these tigers back in 1972 till I turned 2y.o. in 1978. Three 6" dats for the price of $0.15 . So much for old school lol.

Anyway this is a very controversial thread. I believe what you said. I read a previous 18 page thread here that discussed about breeding dats. It created some controversy among datnoid enthusiast to the point that it became too personal. I just hope that there won't be a part 2 of that.

No, didn't take any pics of the eggs.

I'm sure many of the old timers can recall this incident happening.

I remember ;)

That is very true and I feel the same way about it.

It seems as though fish these days become flavor of the month...the hype dies...and then a new fish comes along.

That might be the case with others here but not so with me,I bought my first dat in 91 after seeing them in books and bugging my lfs guy to bring them in.I have kept them off and on since then and I have a good group of them now and out all of the fish that I have kept, dats have always been at or near the top of my list of favorites.

Thanks for the comp, TZCeli. :)

It doesn't really matter if you beleive me or not. I'm not a liar, I wouldn't say anything unless it were true. I don't get anything or get down like that... not not my style. I just call it how it happened. Anyways, I'm aware of "No one ever being able to breed dat's before"... but I'm sure there are many few incidents/events that go on (especially overseas)... undocumented. Behind closed doors... Now letting it be known and going public, even further... wanting to "share?"... that's a totally different story?!! ;)

So what are your thoughts or feelings about some of these dat's that have multi split bars on them? 'Hybrid' dats... or their own species??

Just to mention, had a dat once in the past... on one side, (right side) of it's body... had perfect IT bars. On the other side (left side)... had (3 stripe) pulcher 'widebars'. I mean unless you weren't able to see both sides of this fish, you would think for sure it were either, a 'Widebar', or an Indo. Both sides, clean straight bars... no 'split bars showing at all! I have a video of it somewhere... I'll see if I can dig up and post it. :)

Sorry just got back to MFK from a long weekend.

I wasn't trying to imply you were a liar. If anything, just mistaken. Did you notice any breeding behavior or just see the eggs one day? I was just stating that it is more likely that a female dropped some eggs out of instinct, than 2 different species of Dats bred together, when there are no accounts of it happening in the home aquarium between 2 Dats, even of the the same species. Def not an attack on your honesty. :D

You are correct, the jump in number of these "odd ball" patterned Indos is a strong argument that there is some type of breeding going on. I'm just not ready to decide that is it, and not the possiblity of just plain naturally occuring odd ball patterns. I have a double splitbar of my own, a 3bar/4bar, and a "O" bar. If I were to believe they came from a breeding program, it would be more likely a breeding program that uses injection, not a natural breeding program... not yet anyway. :grinno:

But hey, you were there, and no more then me as to what happen between your Dats. I was just joining in the discussion. Obviously, I would perfer it if there WAS breeding going on, i guess I am just a skeptic. ;)
