OMFG!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
first of all, sorri for ur loss. if it was an amonia spike, then the last thing u wanna do is a water change. the amonia spike is probably cuzed by the lack of bacteria in ur tank or a bacteria break down. da's y ur NO2- and NO3- levels are normal, because there aren't bacteria to convert ur NH3 to NO2-. therefore, u wanna increase ur bacteria level, and when u do a wc, u r takin away more bacteria from the tank.
o, and u have ur set up bare tank or u have gravels/substrate? and wut kinda of filtration do u have?

i had a bare bottom tank for like 3 months, then added gravel with the WC i did. I have 2 penguin 350 hang on filters(around 350GPH I think.) and one penguin 1100 powerhead.

no i took out the fishes as i was doing the WC and added the gravel with the WC, then i putted them back in and they were alright for like the first 20mins or so but after that the acted all weird(after i checked up on them like 1 hour later). Then they started dying one me. So i dont know if its the water or the gravel.

did you rinse off the gravel before you added it
also what did you put the fish in when you were adding the gravel

yea i rinsed the gravel like 3 times with hot water. and i putted the fishes in a 5 gallon bucket with their oringinal tank water and were all okay.

da's the reason for the ammonia spike. cuz if u have bare tank, u better have some other things to let the bacteria build up their colonies. gravels are usually the best way to do it. cuz there're two kinds of beneficial bacteria, one hates oxygen, one can't live w/o it. and the one that hates oxygen hides and builds its colony in the bottom of the gravels or places lacks oxygen.

since u didn't have any gravel, the only place for the bacteria to live is inside of ur filters, and those hob filters are realli limited to the ability to house bacteria, unless u add lots of ceramic rings in there or something. so with ur bacteria lvl already low, and u did big wc, da's when u have ur bacteria break down.

bacteria can't just build up over nite. so basically, after u added the gravels and did the wc, u need to cycle the tank again. da's wut i think happened. ur fishes won't be affected rite away, because the ammonia takes about 2-3days to build up, and w/ur big fishes and all the feeding, the ammonia should build up really quickly. and the bacteria can't realli oxides the ammonia for another 2-3 days, so the ammonia level should be the highest around day 3 of ur wc and gravel adding.

i had 3 big pieces of driftwood in with the bare tank as well. but all has pass and ill learn from it lol

Not correct at all! You need to do huge water changes during a spike to get it out of there. The good bacteria is not in the water.
