Personally I don't use carbon but it sounds like he's tried everything else so it's just a suggestion. He can take it or leave it...no hard feelings either way. ;)

Just trying to teach the right way, and not the shortcuts. lol we ALL have our shortcuts. :)
 
I have no problem with the carbon option if it's a last resort, but as stated before, I believe long term use of carbon can cause harm to your fish, and I would rather find the source of the smell instead of just covering it up if that is at all possible...
I will cover the window, hopefully that will help, can algae really make your tank stink? I have none in the tank, I actually have to feed algae wafers for the pleco to eat cause the tank is always so clean....
 
Algae, or more completely, decaying algae, is a prime source of a strong swampy odor.
