The Real Norcal
Some crazy stuff happened to me this morning.I am just starting to calm down over it and, realizing theres not much else I could do,wanted to relate my story to MFK to both get it off my chest and see what you guys would do if you were in the situation yourself.

Heres how it went down, kinda lengthy story please bare with me:

First of all let me start by saying I live in a 3 bedroom townhouse and have 3 roommates (a guy in one room a couple in the other).

So this morning I'm in the bathroom and someone starts banging on the door.I know at least one of my roommates is home so I figure surely they will get up and answer the door.I guess I was wrong nobody answers the door.

I handle my business in the bathroom and go to the door to see who it is and I only see someone walk by the peep hole.I don't think anything of it and didn't recognize the person at all by the glimpse that I got so I don't open the door, stupid maybe but it didn't appear to be for me and I didn't want to deal with anybody so early in the morning.I see someone get into the passenger side of a car parked in my neighbors parking space and they take off quick (which doesn't really mean anything it was the only empty space at the time).

I'm left wondering pretty much what the hell just happened and make my way to the living room, where I feel a sudden draft....I look and the back door is wide open, and whats worse I had only just unlocked it to check the pond before I had went to the restroom.

So I look around and I realize my xbox 360 is gone. They took the console and the power pack and cable, luckily I had left my hard drive off after tinkering with it the other day,and they didn't take a single controller or the video cable either.

So now I'm left wondering what the heck happened. Its so weird because they knocked first, which I assume means that they wanted to talk to someone who lived there because there were cars in our parking spaces so it definitely didn't appear that no one was home.

The part that gets me is that when nobody came to the door they went around back.....of the only town house in the complex that you happen to be able to go around the back of due to an unfinished portion of fence my landlord never completed....... thats where I'm lost.

And for the record no I didn't call the police if you knew how the police in my area work (or dont) you would understand that would be a total waste of time.

I mean I cant think of anything except keep my eye out for the car, which i have no idea what make or model just that it is a sedan and maroonish with a black car bra.

What else can I do?go banging on the neighbors doors asking who saw what?Or do I just take the extra precautions to make sure it doesn't happen again?(even though it shouldn't have been able to happen, the only reason it did was because I was in the bathroom.)

Anyhow thanks for letting me rant,I would like to hear some of my fellow MFKers takes on the situation, and what they might be doing if it happened to them.

That sucks man.

I would talk to the neighbors and your roomies about it.

If you think the police would be a waste of time, you know their "services" in your area better than I do. (The police in this area suck as well)

Even though you were home, I would still just make sure the doors are locked and be cautious.

they knocked to see if anyone was available, if someone answered they would have asked for somebody who didnt live there, and said "sorry wrong house" but when there wasnt anyone answering the door, they snuck in the back, jacked your stuff and left.

I'm a police officer here in the UK and what we find usually happens is that someone may come and distract you at the front door whilst somebody gains access from the back door.
Sorry to hear that happened matey.... you cannot trust leaving a door open for a second these days. Shame the world's like this.
What are your police force like? / Where you from?

I got one of my tires cut up in my apartment complex recently. I also know how my police operate, although there may be a couple of reasons for you to call them.

1) If you have any type of insurance, or if your parents have insurance, it may be covered under that, but a police report will probably be required to file a claim.

2) When it happened to me, I could tell the cops didn't care much, although later I read in the paper that there had been some sort of spree going on and they caught the people. The cops might be more interested than you think as there might be something going on in your neighborhood.

Exactly... even if there is no chance in catching that person for that crime... we can gain intel on descriptions etc to put onto our intel files and eventually catch that person... any information helps...

Sorry to say this but it sounds like it was someone you know...or someone you know had it done. If yours is one of the only with a back door, the person or persons most likely knew that.

Sorry you had that happen, I know what it is like to have your stuff taken it sucks!!! Especially when your home! I had that happen to me before, while I was asleep, it was a very strange felling to wake up and my speakers gone!

Man when I saw the title my heart dropped, I thought you were going to say your weapons were stolen! I assume they are in a different place if you have all those people living together?

Yeah I had almost thought about it but around here police don't want to mess with any case where there is not hard evidence to be collected from the scene.

In the last year I have had someone smash my windshield and a few months later someone shot through some of the front windows of the house with a pellet gun. Both times I was told pretty much that there wasn't much they could do without any witnesses or anything, but that I could still go ahead with filing the report if I really insisted. Both times I wished I had never called as I had to wait about 3 hours for them to show up anyhow.:screwy:

I cant see how this would be any different.

So you guys think it was random?I dunno it just seems as though theres such a thing as too random.

I mean how did they know they could go around?as mentioned its the only town house there you can go around back on.

And if they were cruising looking for a good random target and were actually out to steal stuff why not some of the tempting houses on my street, why pull into a townhouse complex where the likelihood of witnesses is so much greater?

And if they knocked and figured no one was home why were they still super quite?this guy stole my xbox maybe 25 feet away from me...he had to of opened that slider door so slowly for me not to be able to hear it.You would think if he figured there was no one home he would have got in and got out not worried about noise.

so much stuff doesn't make sense I suppose its easiest on myself if I just drop it and try not to run it through my head like sherlock Holmes.

It makes me want to get a new place and get away from my roommates as I have suspicions this was someone they knew or who knew them....it seems they had some knowledge of the house anyhow.

But I'm so not gonna be able to move out anytime soon.....thus the part where I lock all my crap up and trust no one I guess.
