OMG TEMP SPIKE HELP ME!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Water changes are pretty much the only method. If you do it slowly it wont shock the fish. Add prime or dechlor like usual and just keep doing them until the temp gets closer to normal. Replace the heater and I'd suggest buying a temp control unit. I will always use one cause i've heard to many stories like this one. For some reason the thermostats in aquarium heaters suck.

well its down to 94ish now i guess Ill keep doing water changes or should I was like 20 mins and check the temp and do one and keep doing it like that?

Keep checking your temp and keep doing water changes until you get the temp down to a regular level. The issue I would be concerned about after your temp is under control is what caused the temp to rise so high. Do you know if you heater malfunctioned? Is this tank in front of a window that gets a lot of direct sun light? I live on the 3rd floor and the sun beats directly in through my windows. I had to put sun blocking curtains on the windows. If I didn't have the curtains my bedroom would be a good 10-15 degrees higher than the rest of the apartment.

what the temp control unit do and where can you get them?

Temp controllers are just that, an electronic contraption that turns on and off your heater controlling the temperatures of the aquarium. These units have their own thermometer and it adds another level of safety for your fish. Some of them have alarms that will buzz or peep to notify you of a temp issue.
I use one on almost every tank, they are not cheap, maybe $100 range.
This is how they work. I want my aquarium to have water temps in the 80 range. I have a large aquarium with two sumps. I don’t like the look of heaters in the aquarium so I put my heaters in the sumps. I set my heaters to 90 and plug them into the temp controller. My temp controller probe is in the aquarium and is set to 80. When temps fall below 80 the temp controller sends power to both heaters in the sumps until the temps in the tank get to 80. If the temp controller breaks for some reason and continues to send power to the heaters then the heaters are only set to 90. Hopefully the heaters wont over heat past 90 and also the temp controller alarm will be sounding letting me know there’s an issue.

oh alright cool. I got the temp down to under 84 and my oscar is doing good I thought he was going to die there for a bit

I actually used ice cubes... don't fill the tank but throw a few in there and let them melt wait a bit... throw some more in.... as well do a water change

i have some plastic frozen cooler packs.. when my 60 gallon heater shorted on the first hot day of the year a few years ago i did about a 25% water change and floated the frozen cooler packs till the temp was back down to 80 degrees F and bought a new heater in October when the temps went back down to under 80 degrees F..

okay so i tested my water in my 150g and everything was perfect so I put my oscar in there and I felt the water and its hot. I put my thermometer in there and its 97 degrees F. WHat should I do??? SHould I put ice cubes in there I turned my heater off, opened my window and turned my fan on

Didn't you also post a thread about 2 hours earlier than this one asking how to get your heaters to work???

2 hours is NOT long enough to heat stabilize a tank before adding livestock to it. I don't think you should have added anything until you had a stable temperature for a bare minimum of 48 hours. In fact, if this is on your newer 150 gallon, I'd have waited even longer than that.

Its not new its a used tank. Ive had the heaters in there since monday at around 3. When I put him in there it was at 82, and I thought I lowered the temp on the heaters but I turned the dial the wrong way and I couldnt tell till I put my digital one in and noticed how hot it was.
