On set of gill curl?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you could try a power head in the tank first, the fish will swim in the current and the soft membrane might go back. It didn't work for me and i ended up cutting it off, but it's worth a try.
It's no big deal to cut the membrane off. It takes a few min and it grows back in weeks. Very easy if you're prepared.

I have a powerhead in the tank now to see if it help the gill to go back to normal. But I am going to try the massaging technique instead of operating on him. My thinking is that the massaging will correct the outward growth lol kinda like physical therapy for arowanas!

Well I have been doing a bi-daily water change and went to begin "wearing out" my aro for his massage. Never the less I am assuming it takes a long time to get an aro to the point where they are tired. So anyways I "chased" him for around 20 minutes and he didn't seem to grow weary. But what I did notice was when his breathing became elevated that the gill appeared to be laying flat and no longer curling. So I went ahead and let him be and filled the tank back up. I had done this on Monday and now it is Friday and the gill is no longer curling and appears to have went back to its normal position. Thanks to everyone for your help! I am just happy to have this guy back to adequate health!

I've never had any issues with him jumping prior or after the fact. I followed the thread and instructions and didn't really "chase" him but more or less kept him swimming from one end of the tank to the other. I had no intention of causing him to become scared due to the fact I don't want to have jumping issues.
