On the difficulty of correctly identifying your Goonch. (Bagarius)

What the heck is wrong with you? You comment on every topic on here, and people looking for real information get garbage like this. Your fellow MFK'rs would appreciate you keeping your comments to things like' I didn't know that' or 'neato' . Unless you have first hand knowledge, stifle.

I am currently working on locating a true lica. I REALLY want one. If I get that then I will need a Suchus and that will complete the known goonch list we have confirmed so far :3

Let me know if there is more then one available haha

They're from the most southern part of Thailand, Malaysia and the Indonesian Islands, particularly Borneo. I'd wager that they'd do fabulously in warm water.

Nice, was just making sure they werent from high altitudes in those areas. Im on the hunt until wes gets his next shipment in, then i may just settle for a thai rutlius if i havent found a Lica yet.

I have two confirmed Rutilus pups :) They are great fish! Very tank friendly. I will let you know! My major problem is a lot of the wholesalers in asia want to do repeat business so it is really hard for me to get a box of "undesirable" fish from an unpopular region to the states!

Oh hell yeah thatll be a pain, but i feel like some peeps on here would snatch em up real quick if you got a solid line on Licas! Especially them being able to live in the tropical temps most people run their aggro comms at

Hello everyone. First of all, hats off to you guys, its an amazing thread, really useful and informative. I would like to share some information that i gathered. Im from Pakistan, and half of our rivers are the ones that are coming from India and the rest come from the melting glaciers up north as some parts of the Himalayas are in Pakistan. I always thought that goonches would be in our rivers, so i went deep and started to collect some info. What i came to find out is that Goonches are present in our rivers too, might be the Lica you guys are talking about. The LFS guys didnt know a clue what i was talking about, so i started finding the local fishermen. In our country its called the 'Fauji Khagga', fauji meaning soldier (because of the camo type colour) and khagga meaning catfish. Its also a delicacy in some parts. I managed to find a picture of the goonch that was caught in the river, i would like to share it. I also managed to find a small specimen around 5 inches, that i have kept in my tank, its really beautiful and i love it. So is it a lica? hope im correct. The first picture is the one that i found from a fisherman, the specimen was between 3-4 feet. Thank you :)

This looks almost dead on to the darker patterned Indian highland giants. I actually have one in my tank right now. What Rob and I have seen from what we call Lica from Borneo has a body structure that is a bit different from the cats you have. The body structure in the first fish almost reminds me of a rutilus the way its rounded. (I refer to my Lica as little sausages). I believe what you have is another example of a highlands giant. As for the top photo once again I would need more photos of the fish to make a positive ID but I am certain it is not Lica.

Buffalo dont get too excited yet! Not that easy to find a Lica  someones chomping at the bit! Id snatch up a Rutilus :) They have a similar temperature range :P Also the red/orange fins are gorgeous !

Thanks for the reply. i doubt anyone here would export these. There are both warm and cold rivers here, same as India. You maybe right that the first one is the Rutilus, but what about the smaller one? (i cannot confirm where the smaller one came from, got it from an unknown source who didnt know). One more thing, i tried both, by increasing the water flow in my tank and also decreasing it. I noticed my cat is more active when the water flow is increased.

Those look like highland giants to me as well, albeit with superb patterns. I think the first one being that thick is normal, we don't see pictures of most goonch cats from above like that. Everyone wants to take pictures from the side or of the mouth so that's an unusual angle. Highland giants are typically very wide bodied fish, but when we're used to seeing pictures of them from the side instead of above, it's easy to forget that they're dorsolaterally compressed- that means that they're squished from the top down. This is and adaption to living in the fast running waters from which they come and which B. suchus takes to the extreme. The location from which it was captured is also telling.
