On the difficulty of correctly identifying your Goonch. (Bagarius)

Those look like highland giants to me as well, albeit with superb patterns. I think the first one being that thick is normal, we don't see pictures of most goonch cats from above like that. Everyone wants to take pictures from the side or of the mouth so that's an unusual angle. Highland giants are typically very wide bodied fish, but when we're used to seeing pictures of them from the side instead of above, it's easy to forget that they're dorsolaterally compressed- that means that they're squished from the top down. This is and adaption to living in the fast running waters from which they come and which B. suchus takes to the extreme. The location from which it was captured is also telling.

I was just making a hypothesis that the first pic could be rutilus because of the red on the fins, but honestly with the pics and capture point I knew it wouldnt fit. Unless the pic was taken from SE Asia. I do agree the others look like highlands giants. :) The body very well could be that thick at a large size. Still would love to see a full grown Lica ;)

Thanks again. Even i think that the first one is a rutilus because of the orange fins, but the picture is from river ravi (warm water calm river). So the one thats in my tank im still confused about him? i wonder how i managed to find him. Also i found 2 more pics, the smaller one was caught in the same river you can even notice the calm water behind, but the bigger one was from river indus. Hope they might help

Very very good thread. Lots of information on here. Thank you. But whats the average price for these fish? Does it depend on the type of goonch? Here is a picture of the one im thinking about buying. GOONCH.jpg

Looks like a dwarf goonch now that i look at other goonchs.

The last few pics you put up he looks like the lowlands giant of southeast asia. He shares a resemblance to my lowlands giant Drogon. That being said if my hypothesis is correct he is by no means a dwarf. Check out my personal goonch thread and check the last few pages for pictures of Drogon. He is the one in the picture with the Mahseer. There are more pics of him a few pages before that as well. He is the fastest growing goonch I've had.

I'd say it could go either lowland giant or rutilus. The first pic makes me think ruti but the second pics look LLG.
