How big is your enclosure now wurm? Depending on the size of the snake, may depend on what the best size enclosure for it... I don't bother using live plants, they get a bit trampled by snakes, but use fake ones, and I think they look nice. Also if you get a temp. thing, get a digital thermometer with a probe instead of those exo terra stick on the glass things... I'd also urge you to get a thermostat.
I too have fake plants in with my snakes and they love moving in and out of them.

  1. wurm, get a freaking corn and be done with it,my first snakes were balls and they got me over the bite scares and were cool to hold since they just chill but they do like a bit of humidity and they can do this fasting thing that i think someone already deep into the fish thing will not want to deal with.
  2. im trying to consider all your other responsibilities and what youl have fun with or get anoyed with.all these snakes can be great but, just trust me on the corn, kings and milks along with rosys are great but they can be funny sometimes with a very slow and focused bite to the finger as if you are the mouse.I know this is not always true but its just a little something to think about. Its not going to hurt however, just a little:eek:you know.
  3. ive had the green snakes.if they dont cock back and open their mouths at you as a front and sometimes strikes, they will crap all over you,and pee.they are like snakes on crack.oh yes sometimes they chill, but other times its yucko. If they get lose, youll get to see how fast they are, unless you miss it.
  4. Ive had rosys, milks, kings, balls, well still do,lol, green trees, solomon boas, hog island boas, rainbows and tons of lizards, ive narowed it all down to a corn snake and a red tailed boa.
  5. ive used peat with corns for years no problems but some say not to,go figure,i actualy have peat, rocks half cut logs and several hand fulls of sphanctum moss the corn loves to hide in,they do come out now and then, mine does alot and is a very eager feeder.
  6. the carefresh works awsome and will last a long time for a corn,20 long, safe non toxic substrate,i use a basking lamp on one side of the cage with some rocks under it,water bowl on the other side and spread piles of that moss all around, mine loves it,i think he knows it can hide easy so it comes out a lot more.dude they are so easy.
  7. corns are not that picky about temp or realy anything, you can get al precise if you want but trust me,they are very cool little snakes.start them on the frozen pinkys and keep us posted on its size and well tell you when to move up.
  8. Warm on one side, hide outs, shallow water bowl, nontoxic substrate, tight *** fitting lid, frozen pinkys fully thawed ,dude its easy, easier than loaches ill tell you that.
  9. PS.i wish now that i got an okeetee phase just because its more wild looking to me but i still love my little guy red white and orange.Just do it.Plus if it bit the heck out of you its nothin, even when large its not worse than a cat bite.i hold mine all the time.they are very aleart little guys but not all crazy like greens or garters.

I think I just got a corn snake shoved down my throat! LOL. But I think you may have convinced me. Where do I get this Sphincter moss you speak of?

if you are a begginer, i would suggest a rough skin green snake. they only need a 20 tall, very easy to look after, and on top of that, they are insectivores, so crickets are a good staple diet.

but yeah, they do musk, and that sh*t is nasty.

on second thought, i would go with a corn snake

Dude, not trying to sound mad or anything, but have you read anything in this thread? Yes, on paper, a RGS is a good starter snake, but various people (including myself) have established that they're always WC and heavily laden with parasites, and as a result rarely accept food in captivity. I don't know what kind of experience you've had with the species, but if it was a good one, then it also was a rare exception.

Personally, I've never heard of one musking, but I suppose its definitely possible.

There are always rat snakes as well. They get about 4-5 feet long, and I don't remember cage size. But that is my dream snake!!

They're big in the body, and they're pretty even-tempered.

It looks like you'd decided on a corn anyways, wurm....lol Everyone I've known with corns has never had a complaint. Anyways, good luck with your final choice!! I know we'll all be expecting pictures when you get yours!!

yeah wurm that was fun craming corn down your throat, lol.you should find that stuff at pet shops or look on the net, nursurys maybe, rinse the dust off first.Did the other poster not read that they are hyperactive and mine craped on me all the time.oh well, dont get a green.the corn will lead to harder stuff so beware, lol.good luck wurm,i didnt write sphincter did i?crap i gotta look now.sorry posted 2 times.

i understand. i know that, but when i read the beggining of this thread, and he asked if any ate crickets, i just had to chime in. and they do musk, alot. sorry for being misleading.

Ophiocus, if you havent seen a rough green snake musk, I dont know where youve been... I was on a bike trail around a lake and my dad saw one. I picked it up and it musked all over my arms, gloves, handlebars, and my shirt. I practically cleared a path once we got to the parking lot!

:yuck:
