I have no problem fishing for whatever as long as it has a purpose this goes for hunting as well, if you hunt for food good. But just for sport is just plain wrong.
Do people eat shark? Is it even healthy to eat shark?

I agree, its actually ok to eat sharks, but environmentally sound? Not really.

Yeah, the shark might have died after the fight either way, but if it could have been prevented it would have been nice. A fish that large has probably out lived many of us already, its a shame.

At the same time PETA freaks don't get all your panties in a wad, its not ok to burn animal clinics and pet stores. I think all the issues that we've been dealing with in the past few days, illegal fish to posses, endangered species, invasive species, eating tunas with some dolphin in it, and this bil ole shark, can all be sorted out just by using some common sense, which many don't have. A good start would be not going to either extreme. Ruthless killing or killing the people who kill animals, either way its too extreme.

Ignorance is not bliss. Its leads to the downfall of mankind.

I have fished for big sharks for 20 years. I have kept 3 sharks for food in that time. They fed my family and friends for a long time.I dont see a problem with catching your own food once in a while. I dont think I would have kept that hammerhead , mainly because I dont think you can eat it. A good pict. and let it go.

Some one forgot to tell the sharks where I fish (Northern Gulf of Mexico) that they are being killed faster then they can reproduce because everytime I go out they are EVERYWHERE. Catching sharks down there is as easy as bluegill fishing. Of course its rare to catch a monster that size. Last year I did see a hammerhead about 8-10feet long INSIDE the first sandbar only yards from swimmers off Pensacola beach.

Oh and shark is good to eat. Just a pain in the ass to clean. Their is skin is like leather and you have to clean the fish immediatly once he is on the boat as they tend to erlease urea as they die and it taints the meat.

-no one wants shark populations to be as high as possible more than shark fisherman!

-there are many shark fishing forums on the internet. take a look and you will see that a majority of shark fisherman practice catch and release.

-all states set limits that best manage the population and i dont know of any states that ban harvesting sharks. texas is one per day regardless of species.

bottom line.... its ok to keep a shark every once in a while to fill up your freezer with steaks and its definately ok to keep a shark if it is a record like this one. taking this shark in no way negatively effected the shark population, ecosystems, enviornment etc etc... there are who knows how many number of other sharks ready to benefit from this ones abscence. keep in mind the same people from whom this anti-shark fishing propaganda originates are the same people who will call you guys out for keeping "monster" fish in tanks in your homes.
