One Word Costs Pole Vaulter & Team a Title

i get the argument on both ends but i think maybe a warning should be given, then disqualify

being around sports too in highschool, it's dumb to be a player that has to watch his tongue during a game when during practice you hear from the coach, "drop and give me 20 ladies!" or "Nelson, get your A** outta here and go run 2 EFFING laps!"

Not harsh at all! Keep in mind it's high school competition. If the problem didn't get fix there then what's school for and why should we send our kid to school?

As someone who used to compete in that when I was younger ... I like the rule.

It's teaching kids respect, how to follow rules, how to deal with frustration and setting them up for professionalism in the work place. There was no need for it and it shows lack of personal control of the athelete in question. Imagine swearing when the owner of the company you work for 10 years later tells you that you failed at something. Think he'll let you have your job after that?

I don't see it as "sissification" at all. Being a man means being in control of oneself. Muttering a curse word in front of a judge shows the kid has a lack of respect and self-control. I think it was a good lesson-learned.

In "the old days" a kid wouldn't even try something like this, as children/young adults had respect for their elders and authority.

i agree to a certain extent but some of the greatest minds and most respectful athletes curse. i don't automatically call someone disrespectful or unprofessional just because they cursed.

but there is a thin line there

first off...this is pole vault, which isn't a real sport so i didn't bother reading all of your guys posts...second off...on the home page it says one word costs pole.. i thought it was going to say pole dancer! hahaha, i was like did some guy sue her or somethin like the guy who sued that chick that accidently kicked him in the eye with her heels

Now that's a new one....I've always felt that golf was not a real sport but the thought's never crossed my mind as far as pole vaulting.

haha, i made a thread about that. don't know what ever happened in that case

i was half joking, i'm just more into team sports then individual sports as a whole but i have tremendous respect for track and field events (more the field then the track), men's skating, gymastic and wrestling/fighting/boxing

they can do things that no team sport athletes can ever dream of doing

i'd suck at it i'm sure, but still

it's one of the most oddest competitions ever and i find it hilarious

to me, it's not a true sport but technically, by definition it is one

dictionary.com: sport - an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature

edit: no wait, if you really look at it, can't it be argued that it isn't a sport? it doesn't require any athleticism. a lazy slob like me can train and be good at this and it doesn't require athleticism

and let's continue this conversation in krichardson's thread because we are derailing

that doesn't explain why the spelling bee makes it on espn. annoyes me everytime. yes it's a skill, but not athletic activity
